So I guess my workplace's streaming content isn't blocked on weekends. Those are some seriously good music samples, and complete ones at that. I'm very interested in this set.

Stupid questions: Why isn't the set labeled "complete"? Were there some CBS radio recordings made between 1954 and 1956 that were left out?

Also: Why do some Mosaic sets use the word "Recordings" and others "Sessions"?

Why don't you ask Mosaic?

Because I figured someone on this board already knows the answers, but if not, that will be my backup plan.

wait, that original link was an "onion" like website, right?: cause if mosaic is truly wasting $ and time on a Bing set, something truly has rotted their minds--

New-release e-mail from Cuscuna:

I've always appreciated Bing Crosby. I appreciate how he revolutionized pop singing. Without Crosby, there'd be no Sinatra, Eckstine or Bennett. I appreciate his relaxed, pitch-perfect style and enjoy his jazz-oriented albums like "Bing With A Beat" and "Bing & Satchmo."

So when Robert S. Bader of Bing Crosby Enterprises came by Mosaic one day with the idea that Mosaic would be the perfect vehicle to release a mountain of previously unreleased studio recordings by Bing with Buddy Cole & His Trio made for Crosby's 1954-56 CBS radio program, I was very interested. The idea of tapping into uncompromising material without commercial trappings by great singers who've experienced great success has always intrigued me. It led me to explore and release Capitol transcription sessions by Nat Cole, June Christy and Peggy Lee.

To me, Bing Crosby recording great songs he'd never recorded by the likes of Cole Porter, Fats Waller and the Gershwins with just a quartet backing was too enticing to ignore.

But I was unprepared for what I experienced a week later when Robert Bader sent me CDRs of all the material to review and choose from. I took them home on a Friday night. The following morning, I popped in the first CD. It started with fare in keeping with Crosby's pop success like Irving Berlin's Count Your Blessings Instead Of Sheep" but I was drawn into the real genius of Crosby - his immaculate pitch and his relaxed but deliberate phrasing with the lyric. Clearly, this man didn't take his gift lightly; he worked at his art. Before long, he was digging into jazz favorites like "I Want To Be Happy" and "Keepin' Out Of Mischief Now" and I was hooked, mesmerized by his artistry and command.

After a massive dose of Bing Crosby, I got it! My appreciation turned to awe.

Enjoy,

Michael Cuscuna

Thanks, J.A.W., that was good advice. I received a response this morning from Mosaic:

"There were performances that were recorded for the CBS show that we did not

include like turn-of-the-century (last century) ballads and dirges with only

organ accompaniment and duets with some Lindsay (things like gibbitzing

around with rock tunes like "Rock Around The Clock") - in other words,

things that were unsuccessful or too far afield for this set.

Recordings and Sessions means the same thing. I'm not sure why we sometimes

land on one rather than the other while titling."

Resistance is futile. I have pre-ordered the Crosby set.

Up over and out.

I think I'll make that one a Christmas request. Then I too will join the collective hive mind!

I was just checking my online bank statement when I noticed that my account has debited for the Bing Crosby set. Even though the Mosaic website has not been updated, it looks like this one should be shipping in the next day or so.

Up over and out.

Could someone tell me how many "tracks-with-organ/celeste" the set has? Last time I looked the website's discography didn't give any details. Thanks :)

Trying to figure out if I should cave and buy this set, it was fun to read through this set ... from initial "outrage" via everyone talking themselves and others into buying it to people jumping on it.

I'm still going to wait for some solid reviews, but I'm more than intrigued at the moment.

I hope not many with a celeste. I hate that namby pamby instrument. When I have to listen to one, I try to convince myself, usually unsuccessfully, that it's really a vibraharp.

Very gratifying! I've just placed my order, along with one for the Zeitlin select.

Did you look on your invoice to see if there is a "number"?

The invoice notes it as a promo and typically the booklets have the spot that identifies what the number is and in its place is written "promo." This booklet is blank on the inside cover with no spot at all for the set number to be written. Does your set have the usual hand written number?

My set is shipped but tracking shows I won't get it til Wednesday. I think it moves to a horse and buggy around Little Rock on Monday. :)

Odd that it doesn't have the "XX"s that promos I've seen have.
