J.A.W.
Looks like a compilation containing tracks from her 1956-1959 Liberty and Riverside albums and some of her 1960s-1980s albums on other labels. (edit) This set was released by Universal in Europe in 2009. It looks like a hodge-podge to me. Edited January 11, 2010 by J.A.W.
tranemonk
hmm... sounds intriguing... I don't have ANY of the liberty/riverside but I wonder which of the 80's albums??? I've got almost all of her Verve output from the late 80's/90's/2000's... (edit) This set was released by Universal in Europe in 2009. As far as I can see this set has only one or two tracks each from her one Liberty and three Riverside albums, and I think you'd be better off with the individual OJC reissues as far as the Riversides go: OJC OJCCD-069 Abbey Is Blue (Riverside 1153) OJC OJCCD-085 That's Him! (Riverside 251) OJC OJCCD-205 It's Magic (Riverside 277) Edited January 11, 2010 by J.A.W.
Chuck Nessa
Seems to be a stupid marketing ploy. Bummer.

martindonaldm
This is a pathetic excuse for a "box set" -- it's a simple 3-disc overview of readily available recordings! Abbey has many one-off guest appearance tracks that Hip-O Select would have no trouble accessing [bheki mseleku, Frank Morgan, just for starters] and they ignored them -- I thought box sets were supposed to be about collecting the rarities and previously unreleased alternates and such. Abbey deserves better than this!

Abbey deserves better than this! Hip-O Select could easily have included these guest appearance tracks: A Waltz for Grace - with Steve Williamson [Verve 1990] Ten Cents A Dance - with Frank Morgan [Antilles 1990] Wholly Earth - with Frank Morgan [Anitlles 1990] Through The Years - with Bheki Mseleku [Verve 1994] I Must Have That Man - Carnegie Salutes Jazz Masters [Verve 1994] Christmas Cheer - Jazz For Joy A Verve Christmas Album [Verve 1996] This Christmas - Jazz For Joy A Verve Christmas Album [Verve 1996] and if they want to be multi-label and do licensing these also are some important (and rare) guest appearances they could have included: The Maestro - with Cedar Walton [Muse 1980] Not In Love - with Cedar Walton [Muse 1980] In A Sentimental Mood - with Cedar Walton [Muse 1980] Castles - with Cedar Walton [Muse 1980] For All We Know - with Geri Allen [from Drugstore Cowboy soundtrack / Novus 1989] Straight Ahead - with Mal Waldron [bMG 1997] God Bless The Child - with Mal Waldron [bMG 1997] and these are just the guest appearances they could have included... At least they included *some* of what she did with Max Roach on Candid and Impulse! but this box set really should have been 4 discs and been far more comprehensive... Argh! mikeweil
She really deserves a more comprehensive and complete(!) box ... nevertheless, the webpage linked to in the last post says "SOLD OUT!" ...
