GA Russell Posted October 8, 2012 Report Posted October 8, 2012 Lon, the Dave Douglas is 21,46 euros. What does that work out to in dollars? Quote
cliffpeterson Posted October 8, 2012 Report Posted October 8, 2012 (edited) If I may presume to answer the question directed to Lon. The 21,46 euros is not the real cost for the set shipped to the us. At least amazon.fr and amazon.uk have VATs built into the initial price that you see. That price is not adjusted until further along in the ordering process when you identify that you want the item shipped to the U.S. Then the price of the box is adjusted. In this case, down to 17.94. But, then you have shipping. For this one box, that shipping cost will be 8.50 euros delivered to my house in New York. My total cost for the Douglas box set is 26.44 euros or $35.67 converted by amazon.fr. Or about $7.00 per disc. However, unlike amazon.com, the foreign amazon sites will give you lower shipping costs for combined purchases. Therefore, if you were to buy more of these black saint sets at one time, you will lower your per disc cost to perhaps $6.00 or even lower. Edited October 8, 2012 by cliffpeterson Quote
jazzbo Posted October 8, 2012 Report Posted October 8, 2012 (edited) Thanks for that Cliff. I ordered all the new sets to save on shipping; I would be getting all of them anyway, I really have enjoyed these sets. GA Russell Posted October 8, 2012 Report Posted October 8, 2012 Thanks, Cliff! Great deal, Lon! Quote
jazzbo Posted October 8, 2012 Report Posted October 8, 2012 I agree, especially as I've paid about 20 a piece total for most of the discs in these sets that I bought years ago, and the new remasterings are an improvement. Quote
Pete C Posted October 8, 2012 Report Posted October 8, 2012 Ubu & Jazzbo, many thanks, searching when 3/4 asleep is not a good recipe for results. Yeah, wait until you're 100%, then you might find your dream set. Quote
GA Russell Posted October 8, 2012 Report Posted October 8, 2012 Cliff, the amazon.fr website says that the Douglas box has six discs, so that would bring your $35.67 charge to $5.95 per disc! Quote
cliffpeterson Posted October 8, 2012 Report Posted October 8, 2012 so much for doing things from memory!!!!!!!!! seriously, buying in quantity is advantageous as Lon demonstrated. Consider grouping your purchases with people you know in your area. in effect, create an informal buying group. Quote
GA Russell Posted October 8, 2012 Report Posted October 8, 2012 I believe that Amazon UK charges only 3.00 GBP shipping for one of these boxes. That would be a savings of $6.16 by my calculations. Does anyone recall how long after the release dates it was before Amazon UK carried these CAM Jazz sets? Quote
PHILLYQ Posted October 9, 2012 Report Posted October 9, 2012 Ubu & Jazzbo, many thanks, searching when 3/4 asleep is not a good recipe for results. Yeah, wait until you're 100%, then you might find your dream set. (with Brooklyn accent)Yeah, in yer dreams! Quote
cliffpeterson Posted October 9, 2012 Report Posted October 9, 2012 (edited) amazon.uk would charge me 3.08 pounds for shipping to my house for the douglas set. total cost for the douglas would be $37.46. if I were to buy all five new box sets, shipping would be 7.08 pounds in total from amazon.uk. My total cost from amazon.uk for the five sets including shipping would be $184.30. But, if I were to place the exact same order with amazon.fr it would cost me $165.75 including shipping. webbcity Posted October 9, 2012 Report Posted October 9, 2012 I have lost track...has there been any news of a Billy Bang box, or not yet? Quote
colinmce Posted October 9, 2012 Report Posted October 9, 2012 No, but I hope they do one. He didn't cut a bad album for BS/SN. Quote
webbcity Posted October 9, 2012 Report Posted October 9, 2012 No, but I hope they do one. He didn't cut a bad album for BS/SN. I haven't heard them all, but from the ones I've heard I would agree with you! This one seems like a no-brainer...hope we see it soon. Quote
webbcity Posted October 11, 2012 Report Posted October 11, 2012 I emailed CamJazz asking about a Billy Bang box but haven't gotten a response yet. Maybe if they get a few emails about it they will take notice? Quote
David Ayers Posted October 11, 2012 Report Posted October 11, 2012 I emailed CamJazz asking about a Billy Bang box but haven't gotten a response yet. Maybe if they get a few emails about it they will take notice? Looks like they are being fairly systematic, so where there is a bunch of material I think it will get issued. No Roscoe Mitchell yet either! Quote
webbcity Posted October 12, 2012 Report Posted October 12, 2012 Yes, I'm sort of hoping/assuming this is forthcoming, but just impatient. Quote
Stefan Wood Posted October 12, 2012 Report Posted October 12, 2012 Billy Bang + String Trio of New York = box set goodness. John Lindberg would be nice as well. Quote
David Ayers Posted October 12, 2012 Report Posted October 12, 2012 (edited) Billy Bang + String Trio of New York = box set goodness. John Lindberg would be nice as well. They've hit the spot with this series. With that catalogue it will be like shooting fish in a barrel for another round or two of reissues - Roscoe Mitchell, Billy Bang, Paul Bley, Andrew Hill, Archie Shepp, maybe Glenn Spearman, Jemeel Mondoc, Borah Bergman, maybe Redman/Old and New Dreams (maybe not - there's the Haden box of course), and of course Murray Vol II. I wonder if they will find use for the one- and two-off artists who don't really fit any box? Edited October 12, 2012 by David Ayers Quote
colinmce Posted October 12, 2012 Report Posted October 12, 2012 I'm hoping for Ran Blake, too. Jimmy Lyons wold be great, though I have all of his personally. Quote
T.D. Posted October 12, 2012 Report Posted October 12, 2012 Thanks for the tips on using Amazon.fr! I've never used them before, though French is my best foreign language (OK, that's not saying much). I ordered the Hemphill, Muhal and Adams boxes for a total of E74.81, or USD100.53 according to Amazon.fr's currency converter, which is under $5.60 per disc shipped. I got tired of waiting for US release. Strongly agreed that this series is awesome! Quote
