I've been exploring Discus Music's output lately. It's highly varied but high quality consistently.

Today it's a Paul Dunmall. I've only a couple of  discs with him on ( Fanfares & Freedom with Laura Jurd on Discus). Red Hot Ice is quite James Brown or JR Walker in parts. A fair cast mostly unknown to me other than Martin Archer and Corey Mwamba. I really like this

Dunmall has a huge and varied discography, a lot of which is very good. I haven't caught up with that one yet but another fairly recent one on Discus was a nonet with Julie Tippetts, very good indeed

Second printing box has been shipped to me. Now I only hope it arrives. 😎

Did it make it in the end? Hoping to see them in Friday

Ahmed box arrived safely. So far read the 90 page "book" & played 4 of the 5 CDs. Challenging for sure, but worth it.

We talked a bit about The Wire upthread a little. I have purchased a few recent issues and it seems to be improving in quality. Less of the near-AI institutional artspeak increasingly reviews that aren't afraid to be critical.

Suddenly there is a new AALY Trio recording, first one for 25 years!

It's on Silkheart: https://silkheart.bandcamp.com/album/sustain . Unlike all previous AALY Trio recordings, this one actually is a trio, just Gustafsson - Janson - Nordeson, no Ken Vandermark. Listening to it for the second time in a row - excellent album, mostly on a subdued side. It's such a pleasure to hear woefully rarely-recorded Peter Janson in free jazz context again - what a master! He gets this mesmerizing deep singing sound from the bass like no one else.

I will third the bass playing. It's a very strong album overall, but really is Janson's show.

It’s great to hear the group now. Love to see them live. Saw them with KV in 2002 at Tonic in NYC. Incredible.

Listening to my first Simon Nabatov - Last Minute Theory on Clean Feed.  A top notch group w/Tony Malaby, Brandon Seabrook, Michael Formanek and Gerald Cleaver.  Great stuff.

Will give it a go. I'm never sure about Collier but there are some records on which he's been very good.  Thanks for bringing it to the attention.

How are you liking it? 🙂

I did enjoy it. I only streamed the first track which is free on Bandcamp. Clearly, it is breathing the spirit of Coltrane quite strongly, but now moving towards 1967 Coltrane, with an edge of Charles Gayle. I truth I like Collier here a little more than Parker, who I blow how and cold on.

The Collier I really liked, and which did surprise me, is that I AM record. I strongly recommend that if you haven't heard it yet. Very visceral stuff.

Otherwise I've always had my suspicions of him. He certainly looks the part.

I really liked the new Alexandra Grimal / Giovanni di Domenico record... I knew some of their earlier work but this is better imho (much broader, also, with organs, electronics and things... )

It's interesting music. For some reason, they name their album and songs in Japanese, but I don't know why.  it's one of the reason I miss the liner notes. Well, that's because I'm listening to it on Spotify...

I actually bought the CD after streaming it quite a bit... doesn't come with any liner notes... Giovanni di Domenico has recorded quite a bit with Akira Sakata - but that doesn't quite explain the Japanese song titles...
