The Magnificent Goldberg Posted March 30, 2013 Report Posted March 30, 2013 Just picked this up. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-21983894# He was 72, which surprised me. And South African, which surprised me even more. I'm sure I have some albums he produced but I can't think of any. Apart from the few famous ones mentioned in the news article, what is he known for of interest here? MG Quote
robertoart Posted March 30, 2013 Report Posted March 30, 2013 mmmm, got out of South Africa early. Every time I used to hear this guys name years ago I thought he must have been one of The Ramones. Quote
JSngry Posted March 30, 2013 Report Posted March 30, 2013 Check AMG. He was often used by Creed Taylor for Verve dates. http://www.allmusic.com/artist/phil-ramone-mn0000334243 Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted March 30, 2013 Report Posted March 30, 2013 Yes, Verve is how I know about him, also oddball stuff like the Manny Albam album on Solid State. Quote
JSngry Posted March 30, 2013 Report Posted March 30, 2013 And to be clear, if need be, he was being used as a engineer in his own studio then, not as a producer. I've enjoyed a fair number of hip "pop" productions, though, Very well done and well-thought out, not too dissimilar from Creed Taylor's concepts. I'd be surpassed if there wasn't at least some "influence" of Taylor on Ramone at some point. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted March 30, 2013 Author Report Posted March 30, 2013 Thanks for that, Jim. A little digging and I found he was actually pictured on the inside gatefold of Jimmy McGriff's 'A bag full of soul' (Solid State). Now, can I find a pic to put up here? Oh, I can upload it. There we are. He looks young there MG Quote
GA Russell Posted March 30, 2013 Report Posted March 30, 2013 I've read the name Phil Ramone quite a number of times in the past few years, but I never knew that he was A&R Studios. I'm guessing that he was the R of A&R. Quote

alankin Posted March 30, 2013 Report Posted March 30, 2013 I've read the name Phil Ramone quite a number of times in the past few years, but I never knew that he was A&R Studios. I'm guessing that he was the R of A&R. A&R Studios = Jack Arnold & Phil Ramone, started in 1959.He won his first Grammy for engineering 1964's Getz/Gilberto. Quote
sidewinder Posted March 31, 2013 Report Posted March 31, 2013 There's a picture of him at the recording desk at one of those Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Solid State recording sessions (it's in the Mosaic booklet). Sorry to hear of this - RIP. Quote
Dan Gould Posted March 31, 2013 Report Posted March 31, 2013 First time I saw the name would have been on Billy Joel's breakthrough album. Now knowing his jazz background, was it Phil's idea to get Phil Woods to take the solo on "Just the Way You Are"? (it is Woods isn't it?). Quote
sgcim Posted March 31, 2013 Report Posted March 31, 2013 First time I saw the name would have been on Billy Joel's breakthrough album. Now knowing his jazz background, was it Phil's idea to get Phil Woods to take the solo on "Just the Way You Are"? (it is Woods isn't it?). Yeah, that was completely Phil Ramone's idea. They had the tracks recorded already, and Phil called Phil W. up and asked him to drop by the studio to play a solo on JTWYA, and Phil nailed it on the first try. BJ never met Phil Woods or even heard of him. I think he knew Phil from Julliard, where PR was studying the violin and PW was studying the clarinet. It's sad that another recording guy who actually knew something about music has passed, but we all know some genius homeperson with a keyboard is gonna keep the shit alive. Quote
robertoart Posted March 31, 2013 Report Posted March 31, 2013 I wish Billy Joel had of stayed a homeperson. Or at best spent his career playing in the piano bar he sings about, with people putting bread in his jar Quote
Blue Train Posted March 31, 2013 Report Posted March 31, 2013 (edited) To give you and idea just how incompetent what passes as journialsim is today. He was 72, 79, and 82 when he died. Didn't realize how many things I have involving him as an engineer. Including Ole Coltrane. Be well! P.S. He was 79. Edited March 31, 2013 by Blue Train Quote
