sidewinder Posted May 11, 2018 Report Posted May 11, 2018 (edited) 8 hours ago, Larry Kart said: Unexpectedly, I found the Shaw-Hayes band to be in rather tense, unsettled form here, with the exception of Ronnie Matthews and some of Hayes' solo work. I know that Stafford James' was a longtime Shaw associate, but his sense of of where "one" is seems very pushy to me. Was this a happy band? I get the feeling that it might not have been. By contrast, the wholeness of the "message" of the 1960 Messengers was striking. I remember reading in a gig review in Melody Maker (1976/77?) that there was a major bust up on stage between Woody and Junior Cook during what must have been this tour, during their stint Ronnie Scotts. I recall the gig/tour ended up continuing as a quartet. So what you are sensing was spot on ! Edited May 11, 2018 by sidewinder Quote

HutchFan Posted May 11, 2018 Report Posted May 11, 2018 Henri Texier - Colonel Skopje (Evidence/Label Bleu) I discovered this CD, recorded in 1988, just last year. It's wonderful. Joe Lovano & John Abercrombie fans take note! Quote
mjazzg Posted May 11, 2018 Report Posted May 11, 2018 (edited) Similar line up on this one too All Texier albums on Label bleu come highly recommended. They are a great run, his French and adopted French bands are every bit as good as the Transatlantik Quartet. I'd say that they're better on a number of the releases. Sclavis, Romano, Deschepper, Ferris, Rabeson - there's some great players on these releases and Texier's writing is always worth the entry fee Edited May 11, 2018 by mjazzg Quote

I think I prefer his European bands. On this one I didn’t really hear the personalities of his famous band mates. Lovano was particularly anonymous. Sorry Joe😮 Quote

I wasn't familiar with that one. I do have several of Texier's other recordings on Label Bleu with his European bands. . . . I'm probably in the minority here, but I gotta admit that I prefer Colonel Skopje to some of Texier's more well-known records like Mosaic Man. NP: 2 hours ago, Clunky said: Texier is always worth it.
