Gheorghe Posted March 23, 2020 Report Posted March 23, 2020 I think this was Jackie´s last date in a studio, I´m not sure, but anyway: It´s an all star thing, wonderful musicians and such a wonderful choice of old tunes, mostly ballads, but also faster versions of "Star Eyes" and "What is this thing called Love". I love that record. Quote

duaneiac Posted March 23, 2020 Report Posted March 23, 2020 Enjoying the DVD included in this set: I've only watched the first three programs on this 2 1/2 hour DVD. The second program included the Johnnie Spence Orchestra backing Ms. Fitzgerald on some numbers and Tubby Hayes was given a couple of very brief solos. The 1974 Ronnie Scott's set is very similar to the Pablo LP she recorded there around the same time. It was the one of the first "later era" Ella albums I encountered and it's one of my favorites, so it was fun to see that album "in performance", as it were. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted March 23, 2020 Report Posted March 23, 2020 My favorite track here is "Ornithology" where Bird flies high to the moon. The pianist, who I have never heard of, on every track is Sam Krupit. I am guessing he was a local Washington D.C. musician. He plays quite well on this recording. Quote
Justin V Posted March 24, 2020 Report Posted March 24, 2020 The Smokin' at the Half Note tracks. I've been thinking about Jimmy Cobb since the fundraiser for him launched. I picked this up for the long alternate take of 'Four on Six' that is not on the Verve Master Edition. Surprisingly, it is also not on the complete Verve box. It is sobering to think that Wes died at 45, Wynton Kelly at 39 and Paul Chambers at 33. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 24, 2020 Report Posted March 24, 2020 Missed this back in the day and bought it recently. Fascinating music but sadly, now a cdr without liner information. Quote
OliverM Posted March 24, 2020 Report Posted March 24, 2020 (edited) This comparatively recent (2011) Ocora 2CD set is excellent and has gotten a lot of play here: Bénin, Musiques yoruba. Les voix de la mémoire. The music was recorded between 1958 and 2009. Edited March 24, 2020 by OliverM Quote
