It is, but I've certainly heard much worse (this is not bootleg sound, just poorly recorded), and Criss's performance is incendiary. Quote
jcam_44 Posted June 3, 2020 Report Posted June 3, 2020 Listening to this for the first time since the early 2000's when I promptly discarded it. The only fault I really see in this is the raps. They are poor at best, especially give how creative hip hop was becoming in the early 90's. I wonder what the final product would have been if Miles was there to see this project through. The one thing I have been struck by is how effortless and inventive Miles was without the interplay of a band. really interesting and impressive stuff. Its also intriguing how he was melding the two genres in a similar concept but vastly different way than Steve Coleman was. This made me pull out Hami The Funky Descendant to play next Quote

It's got a great, very full, sound for an album from the early 80s. Pullen is good on it too.  Edited June 3, 2020 by Rabshakeh Quote
jazzbo Posted June 3, 2020 Report Posted June 3, 2020 John Coltrane "Impressions" Japan Impulse MQA/UHQCD Sounds killer. Â Quote
Justin V Posted June 3, 2020 Report Posted June 3, 2020 Disc 2: I've owned this for 3.5 years and this is probably only my second or third run through the set. I'm enjoying it. Between the Duke covers and his Hodges-inflected alto playing, Herman wears his love for Duke on his sleeve. Quote
jazzbo Posted June 3, 2020 Report Posted June 3, 2020 Michael Pedicin "Ballads -- Searching for Peace" Interesting player and album. In a Coltrane mode, at least here. Quote

It's also pretty good. Quote
jazzbo Posted June 3, 2020 Report Posted June 3, 2020 Yes, I like it as well. Right now Lou Donaldson "Quartet, Quintet, Sextet" Blue Note 24 bit by RVG LP facsimile cd, Japan. It amazes how great I can get these to sound on my system these days. I'm buying them when I can at cheaper prices. Quote

I'm on the third disc now. I'm torn here. Although I appreciate that Woody pays tribute to Duke, it begs the question of why I should listen to another big band play Duke when I can just listen to Duke?
