Teasing the Korean Posted September 26, 2021 Report Posted September 26, 2021 Oliver Nelson - The Blues & the Abstract Truth One of my first jazz LPs. This would be an amazing album if it were not for that annoying shit-kickin' redneck track on side 1. Quote

JSngry Posted September 27, 2021 Author Report Posted September 27, 2021 just for the sake of factual accuracy "shit-kickin' rednecks" and "hoe-down" occupy two different zones of linguistic as well as sociological chronological/historical relevancy. Although, there might well be some overlapping of the Venn diagram of generation successions. Some. Quote

But people using that sort of put down are unlikely to make such fine distinctions. Quote

JSngry Posted September 27, 2021 Author Report Posted September 27, 2021 You know what I like about Elvin Jones? When you hired him for your record, by god, you pay for Elvin Jones, you GOT Elvin Jones! The corollary to that is that if you're going to have Elvin Jones on your record, you better be ready to play with Elvin, which everybody here certainly does. Everybody else on this record, yeah, ok, they're parts, but as Trane knew, there is only ONE Elvin Jones. Quote

Rabshakeh Posted September 27, 2021 Report Posted September 27, 2021 Just finished: James Clay and David Fathead Newman - The Sound of the Wide Open Spaces!!!! (Riverside, 1960) Distracting stereo panning, but otherwise a good record. Now on to: Kieran Hebden, Mats Gustafsson and Steve Reid - Live at the South Bank (Smalltown Superjazz, 2011) Quote

They were on a bill with The Thing so it so nearly could have happened that night too. Quote

Funny to return to these after the recent FloPo / Sanders record. Quote
