But they all play very well. Lots of fire. All regulars at Smalls. Farnsworth now of an older generation than the others. All talented. Quote

I’ll have to check this one out. Glover’s recent solo album didn’t impress much but I’ve heard live recordings that were much better. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 20, 2022 Report Posted May 20, 2022 (edited) I listened to part of one of my Dad's final sermons posted on Facebook. He was a master. He is missed. Following this up with a new release from another master of a different art: Bill Evans "Inner Spirit" Resonance Records 2 cd set Edited May 20, 2022 by jazzbo Quote
Quasimado Posted May 20, 2022 Report Posted May 20, 2022 'Talk of the Town' here strikes me as one of the great ballads on disc. Diz is superb - Getz is sublime (and I'm not even a Getz fan)! Quote

Following this up with a new release from another master of a different art: Bill Evans "Inner Spirit" Resonance Records 2 cd set It must be great to have your father's voice to hear, I wish I had taken the time to interview my father at my radio station about his life as an engineer and entrepreneur. I enjoyed Inner Spirit immensely, it was a huge improvement over the widely reissued bootleg versions, I used to own the dreadful West Wind version, which sounded like it was copied directly from the original Yellow Note 2 LP bootleg. I only heard Bill Evans once, with this trio in Atlanta, in November 1979. Once again, I didn't get to hear the encore, since the engineer ran out of tape. I didn't get to hear the encore in Atlanta, as my very sleepy fiancee had to get back to college so we had to leave. But she's enjoyed telling my jazz friends over the years that she actually got to hear him in concert. Unfortunately, this version of "Nardis" was a bit too abstract for her to enjoy in the car... jazzbo Posted May 20, 2022 Report Posted May 20, 2022 Yes, I have a number of recordings of my father, including a 78 of his winning speech when he won a national contest as a senior in high school. This is a great release, and better than the previous bootlegs in sound. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 20, 2022 Report Posted May 20, 2022 So glad I found an affordable copy of this one. Now listening to disc 2. "Elvin Jones live at the Lighthouse" Japanese 24Bit by RVG 2 cd gatefold LP facsimile edition. Quote
JSngry Posted May 20, 2022 Author Report Posted May 20, 2022 a "missing chapter" perhaps? Unjust if so. Quote

A bit rough at the edges though (with the obvious exception of Farnsworth) and at c.28-30 we can't blame it on their youth when we remember what the giants of the past - who are such an influence on these guys - did in their early 20s. 3 hours ago, Chuck Nessa said: 3 hours ago, ghost of miles said: 6 hours ago, Quasimado said: Quote
