jazzbo Posted January 3, 2023 Report Posted January 3, 2023 Lou Donaldson “Lou Takes Off” Blue Note/Audio Wave XRCD24 800×719 63 KB This is a burning bebop session that really comes off well when already into the hard bop reality. I bet the bassist and drummer were TIRED after this. Quote

That must have been a desaster for the record industry and for the musicians. Maybe it had to do with that scheiss-krieg and now we can´t hear much of the real story of the transition from swing to bop. Well there is "Early Bird" with the Jay McShann Orchestra that gives us a glimpse of how music was then, but I heard that Diz and Bird and Oscar Pettiford were on the street as early as 1943,44 .... 1942–1944 musicians' strike - Wikipedia there's lots more that could be said about this, but this is the basics. I remember it was a quite unusual style, mostly with very heavy block chords on that descending chords in the bridge (I think I remember the song is based on "If I had You" in the A section with a bridge of descending chords). T Ralph Burns was member of the early Woody Herman Band (see Capitol). Very well known is his composition "Summer Sequence" in 4 parts. Also co-writer of the famous composition "Early Autumn" featuring Stan Getz in Woodys band. This "Jazz Studio" series Vol 1 to 5 is a very fine series and highly recommended from my side. Have 3 Volumes. Quote

Bluesnik Posted January 3, 2023 Report Posted January 3, 2023 Continuing on in the theme from yesterday with this great set that contains, I think, Capitol and Black and White sessions. And thanks very much John L for your suggestion. Quote

Rollin' Stone contains the first 50 titles (1947-1952) Hoochie Coochie Man has the next 51 titles ((1952-1958) You Shook Me adds 49 titles (1958-1963) This makes a chronological survey of Muddy Waters recordings for Aristocrat / Chess records (1947-1963) Quote
