Arrived from cdjapan.co.jp last night, a Helen Merrill recording that has eluded me until now. So glad this one was reissued!

Helen Merrill “Imagination” Lob Records/Solid Records Japan cd

9b064a5017663a5fd3fe2023656c7c4b4876b576

Bass – Hideo Kawahara
Drums – Tim Horner
Piano – Kosei Uchida
Vocals – Helen Merrill

This is a reissue of a reissue I believe, it contains the three instrumental trio tracks that were not on the original release.

Michael Blake - Dance of the Mystic Bliss (P&M Records, 2023)
This disc is due for release in May, but I got an advanced copy at his performance at Rizzoli Bookstore in NYC on Sunday. :g

A snapshot of Blake during the performance (with bassist Michael Bates):

If you like Michael Blake, this one is rather good (led by Kresten Osgood with Dr. Lonnie Smith): Hammond Rens

Cassandra Wilson “Jump World” Winter&Winter Records reissue.

Haven’t heard this one in a while! From 1990 and sounds like it. No judgment–I was playing Simmons electronic drums as well as my Sonor kit then and thought this cd was very very cool in the JMT edition I had with this cover:

Giving it a first listen now and I'm impressed. I dig the production...nice compositions and thanks to an amazon review, the inspiration behind it sounds interesting. Thanks for the rec here 👍

Tate's tone is Texas, but the music is pure KayCee.

Got it mostly because I wanted more Swana than I already had. Good album, but I wish Van Ruller had been replaced by a pianist whose comping reinforced Penn's drum work -- like Orrin Evans for example.

Jump World was pretty grabbing back in the day. Glad to hear that it still is. I still think that whatever M-Base "backlash" that there was was a bit broad and ultimately myopic in throwing it all out,.

Then again, that's the nature of backlashes.

This arrived yesterday after I paid less than 7 bucks after tax with free shipping.  I already had the moving Eastbourne concert from the Centennial box, but there's plenty of other stuff that's new to me.  The Reader's Digest material is fun and hearing Duke's vocals on 'Moon Maiden' puts a smile on my face.  The three short solos from the party are an interesting snapshot of that time.  Seriously, to be at a party with Willie 'The Lion' Smith and Duke and have Duke play the piano?   I can't even imagine it.  Having the bonus Tanglewood material to complete what I have on the giant box is nice.  I also appreciate having the Duke introductions to the Tanglewood and festival material.

The used vinyl copy of this that I found years ago contained a newspaper clipping from The Boston Globe dated Tuesday, June 30, 1981 reviewing Herbie's set at the Berklee Performance Center the night before. Here's an excerpt from the review.

One of the hindrances to enjoyment was that most basic problem: set length.  Hancock's nine-song set lasted only 75 minutes and, at $13.50 a ticket, that doesn't rank high on the music-for-money scale.  "I seriously thought it was intermission," said one disgruntled fan after the show.  "A lof of people thought it was intermission."

Which translates to about $45 in today's dollars.  Plus the cost (money, time, energy) of getting there, parking, etc.  And it's all over in a little more than an hour.
