HutchFan Posted August 15, 2023 Report Posted August 15, 2023 (edited) Now streaming: Quarteto Em Cy (Odeon Brazil, 1972); reissued by Elemental Although they're very different, I think learning to get inside The Singers Unlimited's music laid the groundwork for my understanding of this group. . . . Coming out of bossa nova, this quartet taps into that early-70s Euro-sophistication/decadence vibe, but -- paradoxically -- there's also a strain (maybe even more prominent) of late-60s idealism/pop-innocence. Naturally, they're locked in on that delicious, distinctively Brazilian sway & sinuousness too. Since I don't know Portuguese, I have no idea what they're saying. Regardless, from a purely musical point of view, it's an intoxicating mix. (Im)pure Pop for Now (no-longer-young) People. Edited August 15, 2023 by HutchFan Quote
Rabshakeh Posted August 15, 2023 Report Posted August 15, 2023 Chick Corea Elektric Band – To The Stars Chick's clientology record. A tone poem inspired by the works of Elron. David Weckl kills on this record, even if it isn't all that great otherwise. Quote

You never quite know what you're gonna get with Chick. Quote

I always found the Elektric Band to be slog through the muck, and is some of the only Chick I have fully excused myself from ever needing to explore further. Quote

Strangely I find this one easier to handle than most. The first track is gross out space invaders fusion, but a lot of the rest of it is pretty good electric jazz, much better recorded than those very dry and lifeless earlier records. Quote

I have quite a few Stanley Cowell albums. Most of them are, to my taste, very good, though a few veer off in a direction that does not appeal to me. This has a few more horn players than most of his things, and yet there are a few tracks without horns. Currently listening to: Quote

I think I enjoyed Light Years the most of the earlies, but this one is maybe stronger, particularly once past the first track. I think a lot of that is down to the recording style, which is more natural and dynamic.i hate how those early records sound. Quote

Those were the days when you were waiting for the next album of Sonny Rollins and when you saw him live playing you would get live renditions of just recently recorded tunes. This is one of my favourite Milestone albums of Rollins. I heard him play the "Isn´t She Lovely" shortly after that recording, with Mark Soskin, Jerome Harris and the great Al Foster. Same was after the "No Question" album with Larry Corryell, just great times. Quote
