Tom Waits, I assume there's not another album with that title. I was knocked out by that the day I bought the LP in the week it was released.

I can still remember listening to it with my mate, we were big Waits fans and Heartattack And Vine had hinted a little at a new direction but we didn't see the new sound coming at all

I knew Rain Dogs fairly well when I first heard Swordfishtrombones, knew Greg Cohen a bit from his work with John Zorn... There's stuff that's just different when you live through history in it's linear way

Stan Kenton – Kenton / Wagner

R-6526394-1432692948-3125.jpg

Just hilarious. Let's take Ride of the Valkyries and play it in the most lumpen way possible. You know what this needs, lads? Latin percussion.

Yeah, that's a bizarre one! One of the few that has never been reissued on cd!

I'm listening to this one, which I got after reading about it here on the board:

Stanley Turrentine and the Three Sounds “The Blue Hour, Volume 2” TOCJ Japan cd

I see many who think this second volume (a “Lost Session”) is inferior to the released “Blue Hour” . . . but I like it nearly as much.

Stan Kenton – Sketches On Standards

This one you can certainly identify the soloists. Still many of the same issues with not really swinging though, but I quite enjoyed this one.

Its a good one I like very much from the beginning. Good songs and nice melodies.

😁👍

Really enjoying this comp.

Just hit me recently. I want the colour and complexity of big band charts at the moment. Don't know why.

Edit: I should add that all the Kenton today has made me more unpopular with my partner than months of Arthur Doyle and Albert Ayler could have done.

Depending on my mood, I sometimes like this second batch of tunes more. The released "Blue Hour" is excellent late night blues to wind down with. It can be a bit sleepy if the mood doesn't fit.

One of the true  "classics" with Woody. Have the original Capitol vinyl.  BTW beside Kenton Woody is a great part of my total big band stock. Other great examples are Shorty Rogers, Buddy Rich, Bob Florence, Basie & Duke. Cant name them all but big band is a fine  cathegory  of jazz for me.

Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers “Gypsy Folk Tales” Roulette Japan SHM-CD

6d9a395c7380855a554777f346d304d65378997a
Has that 'seventies jazz recording sound, but it’s definitely a Jazz Messengers album! Sound is much clearer here than on a previous European 2 cd set I had of the Roulette material.

Alto Saxophone – Bobby Watson

Bass – Dennis Irwin

Drums – Art Blakey

Tenor Saxophone – David Schnitter

Trumpet – Valery Ponomarev

Tenor Saxophone – Abraham Burton
Trumpet – Josh Evans
Vibraphone – Steve Nelson
