The Coltrane-Ellington thing I remember I got from Serena, she has that thing she just read the interpret and knew she somehow heard me mention him, and bought it. Funny she knew the name "Coltrane" better then "Elllingon". 

The interesting thing is, Ellington is one of my favourite composers and he is compin so fine on the tunes, but other than Monk if he does his or elseone´s composition, I prefer to hear Ellingtons composition played by others. Same like a Dizzy with Basie LP I also got from her. She knew who´s Diz (or better: his cheeks) but had´n heard of Basie, and maybe the instrumentation quartet with Basie is quite thin. 
But they are some of the most interesting albums, and the most beautiful of those star-combinations is another one I got from her "Coltrane-Hartman" with that fantastic bop era balladeer.....

Interesting. While I do like to hear Ellington compositions by others they are really not a substitute for the "real thing" for me. The Ellington Orchestra is an amazing musical organization. There's a slop in their presentation, just a dollop, that makes them unique for me--tightness in tension with a little looseness. And Ellington and Strayhorns arrangements are always interesting and I love how they are framed for soloists and how the soloists and the framing changes over the years. And there are instrumental voicings that just floor me with their uniqueness and beauty. I think if I were isolated to a deserted island I'd wish I had a lot of Ellington recordings with me. . . I'd leave a lot of others' behind if I could bring more Duke.

First Dixieland record that I've enjoyed in a while. 

World Saxophone Quartet – 25th Anniversary - The New Chapter

Hard to think of a WSQ record I don't like, but the more that they settled into a settled groove gospel concept with their later records, the more I find them a great listen, even if Hemphill's ideas are missed. Bluiett just always keeps things cooking, and his high cholesterol playing in this context has so much of what I love most about jazz and improvised music: a deep sense of blues funk lodged right up there.
