jazzbo Posted November 23, 2022 Report Posted November 23, 2022 Wow. I forgot how thrilling the duet between Ella (scat) and Booty Wood (on trombone) was on this Pablo cd! I find the cd sounds best with phase in the “OUT” position on my DAC. Now on to Randy Weston “Solo, Duio & Trio” OJC cd Quote

HutchFan Posted November 24, 2022 Report Posted November 24, 2022 Now playing: Masahiko Satoh - Amorphism (Portrait, 1986) with Eddie Gomez & Steve Gadd Redolent of the 1980s -- it's the synthesizers (among other things) -- but also compelling and unique. Quote

The Side One with Rollins is very fine and has immortalized the blues "Down", which he also played live at BL. Side II I think is that stuff with Cohn and Zoot, composed by Cohn, well it´s nice and "tasty", but maybe a bit to much like tunes for an old "show orchestra". But beautiful solos. 15 hours ago, BillF said: 👍 👍 👍 Now playing: 👍 Somehow "Peckin´ Time didn´t become a favourite. I had great expectations when I bought it in the States/FL in 1999, but I think it´s the drummer Charlie Persip, who is more a big band drummer I think. He also ruined the otherwise fantastic 1953 Mobley-Benny Green live set, where he plays a very old Gene Krupa styled drums with 4ths on the bass drum, so covering completly the bass lines......, it just goes "doof daff doof daff" all the time. I'm struck by how far Miles is from the bop that preceded this and in which he was a participant. In fact, his drawn out, inflected utterances bring to mind figures of an earlier generation, such as Johnny Hodges or Ben Webster. Edited November 24, 2022 by BillF Quote
