Just in: Grateful Dead “Dave’s Picks Volume 59” 3 disc set, disc 1

Boston Garden, September 26, 1991

I’m not that familiar with the Dead in the 'nineties. . . a different animal than I’m used to.

Listening to this one again as a phone call interrupted it, and any listening, last night.

I really like Sorey’s playing and like the release with Greg Osby enjoy horns on his recordings as a leader. This release re-interprets the Max Roach album “Members Don’t Git Weary” . . . . .

Tyshawn Sorey “Members. . . Don’t!” Pi 2 cd set, disc 1

Tyshawn Sorey – drums, arrangements

Adam O’Farrill – trumpet, electronics

Mark Shim – tenor saxophone

Lex Korten – piano

Tyrone Allen II – bass

Fay Victor – vocals on “Members, Don’t Git Weary”

I'll listen to just about anything that Tyshawn is involved in. And I try to see him whenever I have a chance. It's amazing how many varied projects and musicians he collaborates with.

A beautiful cool morning here. I had a crazy dream that I was happy to wake up from that involved paleontology and politics.

It’s the birthday of the one and only Louis Armstrong. To that end I’m spinning disc 2 of this amazing set, with the earliest recordings of Louis Armstrong in incredble fidelity. This is world-changing music in a way–so much to hear in these grooves, setting the pattern for so much to come.

King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band / Various Artists “Centennial” Archeophone Records 4 cd, 2 LP set with book.

This is a fascinating set that I have been savoring slowly in the past months. A truly historic labor of love.

On to something quite different, the fascinating final release by David Bowie, “Black Star,” the Sony Blu-Spec CD2 version.

Montoliu - Songs (Copy).jpg

Yes, that's the cover used in some European reissues starting in 1992. There's even a third cover from a low-budget Spanish label, Marfer:

Songs For Love, principal, 1 de 4
