Kim Pensyl - Pensyl Sketches #2

I love these records. Sort of lounge fusion. They remind me a bit of the soundtrack to the video game Sim City 2000. 

Rico Jones - Bloodlines

 

This one did quite well in Reddit last year. It definitely benefits from the fact that it is Jones' debut. You can tell that a lot of effort and love and youthful enthusiasm and hope has been poured into it. Nasheet Waits is a bit of a saviour here. I feel the same way about it that I used to feel about those Binker Golding and Moses Boyd records: it's nice to hear players who are young and committed and excited.

I lost about four hours of listening as our power went out. . . or more likely was turned off as repairs were done to lines for neighbors as we had power for hours after neighbors lost theirs. Was a pretty big rainstorm passed through.

Celebrating having power back with “Flora Purim sings Milton Nascimento” which is a killer release. I’m still as excited with this release as when it first appeared.

This one captures you with the first bars. When I first got this I didn’t expect it to be this.

A little drama last night. . .we have a bat in the house. Or had, I may have chased it out, not sure. We’ll see I guess. FREAKED Lucinda out. Wasn’t little, either. . . .

More rain over night, but stopped an hour or so ago. Starting the day off with a Charles Lloyd I had neglected, “8–Kindred Spirits Live from the Lobero” on Blue Note cd (there’s also a DVD).

Charles Lloyd with guitarist Julian Lage, pianist Gerald Clayton, bassist Reuben Rogers, and drummer Eric Harland, with special guests organist Booker T. Jones and bassist Don Was joining the ensemble midway.

Hermeto Pascoal E Grupo – Brasil Universo

Pascoal is one of those musicians who have never really clicked for me. It makes a bit more sense to me if I divorce it from the Brazilian context and I see it as a sort of equivalent to Canterbury prog or french fusion.

Flying Lotus "Cosmogramma" Warp Records cd

I did not realize til lately that Flying Lotus was a great-nephew of Alice Coltrane. This was his third release and does show some cosmic spiritual influence. And there's that harp. . . .

I love Hermeto's work. I personally can't NOT think of him as a part of the Brazilian music I love.

I miss the era when these records were coming out frequently. A short period where jazz and electronic music were being mixed with satisfactory results. 

I do find that the music lacks the replay value of music produced by musicians: what you hear the first time is what you hear the second, third and fourth time. But this is still a good record.

I’m listening to a compilation that “Dr. Orchid” made for me of Grateful Dead tracks featuring Pigpen from 1966. Followed by “The Apartment Tapes.” Talk about “primal Dead!”
