Naked City – Live Volume 1: Knitting Factory 1989

This one is pretty great. I had avoided it because I assumed it was the band with Yamatsuka Eye but actually it is a live performance from before the initial record came out: the same songs from the 1990 album and no stupid fake grindcore vocalising. Nice to hear these tunes executed in a live setting.

A really quite interesting one in Zorn's catalogue because it seems to be completely without irony. Very lush exotica arrangements of tunes that sound like they're by Steve Reich, or something. Not something I'll listen to again, but interesting.

I don't understand why Zorn's name is on this as a leader though. i can see when there's an orchestra, like Maria Schneider's releases, but this is a sextet. Doesn't seem like Zorn's a "conductor" as much as he is simply the producer.

I think it is his compositions and arrangements. Although a few of them sound pretty familiar.

He really would have done better to release 1/10 of the material and to have spent more time on it.

This morning I realized I had only listened to disc 1 of this great 3 cd set, so now disc 2. This set is a nice overview of Tubby and his art. And all previously unreleased!

Pulled this one from boxes from storage, and even though I have it in the Mosaic set, this Jazz Unlimited cd sounds awesome! It’s going into the sale pile after this listen.

We had a little rain last night, but not stormy weather–Tobi slept well.

One other great thing about pulling boxes from the storage unit is finding these discs again–an excellent box set that I have missed for a decade.
