Last night, I bought two of Greg Abate's latest releases after I saw him perform at Arthur's House of Jazz in Methuen, MA. One is titled "Positive Energy" (Summit Records). He made it when he was on tour in New Mexico with a local rhythm section of John Rangel (p), Terry Burns (b) & Dave Rost (d). The other is a 2 CD set that I meant to buy from Greg the last time I saw him live but he sold the last copy before I could get one. It's Greg's live recording with Phil Woods "Kindred Spirits: Live At Chan's" (Whaling City Sound).

He had one slightly beat-cased copy of 'Chan's' in his box when I saw him last Summer. Greg signed it but was a bit saddened I think that I went for that one and not one of his newer CDs.

I'd aimed to put that right at one of his fairly frequent UK tours but so far I've yet to catch a more recent gig (usually with the Craig Milverton Trio when in this part of the country). Hopefully he is back at Swanage in July for me to check out his box of goodies.

He said he's got a new one coming out soon so maybe he'll have that with him the next time you see him... although he did say that it's gotten really bad for CD sales at his shows recently.

Ok, I was wondering because the physical store has a literal "Bargain Basement". Literally some cut rate stuff that is literally in the basement. At least it did when my daughter was there last time. We shopped via videochat.

It's sort of an Island Of Misfit Toys and has never been listed on the website that I know of. Still isn't!

Exactly!!!

They got me with these:

  • Elliott Carter — Piano Works – Winston Choi
  • Beethoven — Complete Cello Sonatas/Variations On Themes From Mozart's Die Zauberflote – Pable Casals & Rudolf Serkin
  • Awakening — Hear, Sense & Feel
  • Awakening — Mirage
  • Llew Matthews with Jackie McLean — Nathalie
  • Jaki Byard — Solo/Strings – Jaki Byard With Strings/Solo Piano

Click on CD Deals. This takes you to CDs under $9. Then for example Jazz (currently 362 items). There has been a corncucopia of cheap CDs on Delmark, Timeless and Sackville lately.

That lovely moment a Discogs seller has multiple items from your wantlist:

Angles! They're a great band in whichever size

The physical "bargain basement" had a bunch of "well played" records mostly under $2.00. like at Josey, basically a lot of crap, but you might find something quirky enough or something just for a cover.

Yeah they definitely deserve some more attention here on the board. Very distinctive and creative sound.

Yeah. I’ve been in both of those bargain basements. I was on a bit of a time crunch but DG’s basement was a bit overwhelming in compactness and organization.

All four of these are MP3 to CD upgrades:

I always get to think when I walk by that place (Oudeschans 75 in Amsterdam, also visible on google maps)... since those days, the building has been completely refurbished, and where it says "BIMHUIS" in the picture (BIM = Association of Improvising Musicians, HUIS = house) it now says "Luxury Suites Amsterdam"... (and, of course, the BIMHUIS also still exists, in another location, much fancier than before)

Vinnie Burke All-Stars - s/t, an HMV test pressing of all things

Derek Bailey - Lot 73

Vinnie Burke's String Jazz Quartet - s/t

The Smith/Glamann Quintet - Poinciana

Immanuel Wilkins - Blues Blood

So much for LP-dry January...

Cutting down on pricey imports, but this includes Togashi and Satoh and sounded excellent on Youtube.

Great album, well worth the investment

They sponsored a "listening party" on Bandcamp today, so I bought the album online. Sounds great!

It was Bandcamp Friday, so I picked up a few things that I had been eying, mostly world music: Ayinde Bakare And His Orchestra – Live The Highlife, Dar Disku by Dar Disku, Mosawi Swiri by Maalem Houssam Guinia, Flashpoints and Undercurrents by John Surman and Emily Remler Cookin'  at the Queens.

Will consider Berne/Rainey Yikes Too! for next Bandcamp Friday.

A couple days ago, I stumbled across this LP in Soul Village Records, a local shop:

Manu Dibango - Soul Makossa (Atlantic, 1973)

It's been on my "to get" list for a long time.  :)
