JSngry Posted April 5 Report Posted April 5 This has to be one of the more surreal albums I've come across in a while. Proby wrote and performed all these songs, not for Elvis the general performer, but for Elvis movies, the really stupid, crappy ones. And it's like he's determined to be inside the movie himself, doing Elvis with all the weirdness of those movies spinning out of these songs. The song titles give you an idea of just what is going to happen - and it does. It's no secret that I generally have ZERO use for Elvis, but this is a different animal altogether, I don't know that any of these songs made it into any of the movies, and that creates an even more otherness to the music - Proby as Elvis in Proby Elvis moves. Mayby qa parody, but only as a secondary objective. It's a trip, as is so much of Proby in general. Skills AND concept. Quote

Initial streaming certainly suggests and album for these times, I would love to have heard that dual interview. Their previous recordings are wonderful too. Where Iyer does his best work these days to my ears, many others would say his trio but not for ne The Vijay Iyer/Wadada Leo Smith duo concert at Big Ears last weekend was really fantastic. The preceding concert, Wadada Leo Smith's Revolutionary Fire Love, was also quite good and featured Iyer in a larger group. Quote

Ok, so it looks like Proby didn't necessarily write all of these songs, and that some of them did find their way into Elvis's movies. But there's really no comparison. Elvis is just invisible Proby is full-on creepy. Way ahead of his time, imo. Ā Quote

Niko Posted April 7 Report Posted April 7 Curious about that one as well... everyone around me seems to love it - despite the cover art which has more to do with "Grey's Anatomy" than with Reid Miles Quote
Pim Posted April 12 Report Posted April 12 (edited) Saved up monthly for the big record fair in Den Bosch and I did manage to pick up some great records. Prices seem to get a little more reasonable too. These items were all on my 64 piece wantlist so I felt very lucky. And I didnāt make even one impulsive buy. The discipline of me. Iām getting better at these things.Ā Ā Ā Edited April 12 by Pim Quote

I'm going to spin it again before deciding where it sits with reference to the original. I do know that I like Calderazzo's piano playing quite a bit, so at least that's not a problem in comparison. Kevin Bresnahan Posted April 14 Report Posted April 14 Last night, I picked up a few CDs at my local Bull Moose Music store. Charlie Haden & Quartet West - In Angel City (Verve). I've had Quartet West's 1st CD for decades & saw the band several times but never got around to picking up their 2nd release until now. I also picked up a used copy of Peter Gabriel's latest, "i/o". I got the 3 disc set with a surround mix on BlueRay. I like Gabriel's work so I'm wondering how he'll treat the surround tracks. Quote
mjazzg Posted April 15 Report Posted April 15 Can't go wrong with Charles on ECM as far as I'm concerned, enjoy them Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted April 15 Report Posted April 15 Yesterday, at the urging of my friend @Tom 1960, I sampled a newer (10/2024) release from drummer Jacob Wendt titled "Silver Street". The band plays in a style that harkens back to The Jazz Messengers and Wendt has said that this was what they were going for so kudos to the band for hitting their target. It's not a copycat tribute but an updated take, so no fear of that. You can sample/download it at bandcamp: Silver Street, by Jacob Wendt . I wanted the Kevin Gray-cut LP version (which is not on bandcamp for some reason) so I ordered that LP from The 'In' Groove. While I was at The 'In' Groove website, I decide to pick up Gray's Chohearant label's latest release from Corey Weeds while I was at it. Quote
