This is how my wife directed this: Dusty Groove closes at 7 p.m., so I'll drive you there and get you there by 6:57 p.m., so you can only get through the A's. So, I bought Cannonball's Sharshooters, not exactly the edition I wanted, but they were practically throwing me out; no need telling them you're from out of town/once in a lifetime experience...save it; they don't care. What I did do, is finish shopping on-line: Chet Baker Quartet w/ Russ Freeman-Capitol/Pacific Jazz Conte Condoli Quartet-Mode Japan new George Wallington-Leonard Feather Presents Bop-Mode Japan new Edited Friday at 08:37 AM by Holy Ghost Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted Friday at 01:00 PM Report Posted Friday at 01:00 PM (edited) Last afternoon's local purchases: Mary Lou Williams, The Asch Recordings (2-LP box set on Folkways FA 2966) Fairly reasonably priced (for our latitudes ) at 15 EUR. (Box VG+, haven't played the records yet but they look totally unmarked) And then, a chance purchase ... Emmett Miller Acc. By His Georgia Crackers Crackers (green vinyl on The Old Masters TOM-1) for a mere 2,50 EUR in close to NM condition from the Special Offers bin. 😃 Actually an item that had crossed my mind a couple of weeks ago after I had re-read Nick Tosches' "Country, The Twisted Roots of Rock'n'Roll". He dwells at length on and enthuses about Emmett Miller (as does Allen Lowe in some of his writings) as a unpigeonholable one-of-a-kind early country-cum-blues-cum-jazz "crossover" artist and even mentions this TOM reissue in his book. So, having found one or the other early jazz TOM LPs at my "go-to" record shop in their Sale bins, I wondered, "Would it be totally unlikely that a copy of that one comes my way there before long too"? Well - lo and behold, there it sat now, waiting for me to give it a new home ... (among a handful of other TOM LPs featuring 20s jazz bands, but I skipped these for the time being). (Yes I know Miller's music has been reissued elsewhere since, too, but this would have meant mail-ordering from who knows where ...) Edited Friday at 01:57 PM by Big Beat Steve Quote
Niko Posted Friday at 02:31 PM Report Posted Friday at 02:31 PM that Mary Lou Williams I am also hoping to find some day... My purchases of the last two weeks: Anthony Braxton (Actuel 15) ... think quit a few people are replacing the originals with LPs right now Cal Tjader - Last night when we were young ( a ballads album on Fantasy from the 70s with Frank Strazzeri who also arranged the strings) The Contemporary Jazz Classics Of The Paul Moer Trio Sonny Stitt & the Top Brass (someone put the ugly but good-sounding 1980s LP into a nice 1960s original jacket) Albert Ayler - The Hilversum Session Shorty Rogers – Afro-Cuban Influence Quote

T.D. Posted yesterday at 01:46 AM Report Posted yesterday at 01:46 AM Been on the want list a while, listened on bandcamp and pulled the trigger. I've posted before that I find Barry Guy's large ensemble material much more compelling than what I hear from the "contemporary classical" sector. Quote
