The Magnificent Goldberg Posted November 17, 2006 Report Posted November 17, 2006 Well, the postman came today and brought me some goodies from Amazon France. The two I ordered were: Amazon also sent me a freebie: This compilation was issued by UNICEF earlier this year, to support efforts to demobilise child solders in Africa. Damn good album! Not sure about the value of giving it away free, though. MG Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted November 18, 2006 Report Posted November 18, 2006 Got three cheapo swing band CDs in Ponty today The other two were in the same series by Count Basie and Chick Webb (no pix on the web). Nice stuff, generally not many of the bands’ best known singles, it seems. Which gives me scope for more compilations in due course. MG Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted November 18, 2006 Report Posted November 18, 2006 Here ya go MG....... Fine stuff at cheeepy prices: Knock yerself out! Mine were cheaper than e-bay Where did you get the images, Rod? Post them yourself? MG Quote

ep1str0phy Posted November 19, 2006 Report Posted November 19, 2006 Some contemporary material: -Anthony Braxton w/the Creative Jazz Orchestra: Composition No. 175/Composition No. 126 -Dudek/Niebergall/Vesala: Open -Bailey/Lewis/Zorn: Yankees -Frank Wright: Unity ...listening to the Braxton right now, and it's pretty dense. Fascinating, but packed. Quote
Matthew Posted November 19, 2006 Report Posted November 19, 2006 (edited) Well, checked how much I had left on my credit card, closed my eyes, prayed for courage, and bought this.... The Complete Bill Evans on Verve. Supposed to be "like new," the Amazon seller had 100% positive feedback. What the heck, you only live once. PS: this picture is not the copy I bought, my copy should not have rust on it -- I hope. Edited November 19, 2006 by Matthew Quote

Guy Berger Posted November 25, 2006 Report Posted November 25, 2006 I went somewhat berserk at Tower's 40% off + 5 for the price of 4 sale. (Only "somewhat" -- I only picked up 10 cds.) The following cost me $88.89: Art Ensemble of Chicago, Fanfare for the Warriors Albert Ayler, Spiritual Unity Gil Evans, Out of the Cool Jan Garbarek, Witchi Tai To Charlie Haden, Liberation Music Orchestra Charlie Haden & Hank Jones, Steal Away Roy Haynes, Out of the Afternoon Paul Shapiro, It's In the Twilight Archie Shepp, Four for Trane Bobo Stenson/Anders Jormin/Paul Motian, Goodbye Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted November 25, 2006 Report Posted November 25, 2006 (edited) This one turned up this morning - "Apala messenger" by Haruna Ishola & his Apala Group. Very many thanks to Rod for putting me on to its availability. I've been looking for a good compilation of Haruna Ishola's work from the '60s and '70s and this is great. I only had a couple of tracks I taped off the radio many years ago. Ishola was the leading exponent of Apala music, popular among the northern Yoruba who generally follow Islam. Very different from the Highlife that is more popular along the southe coast of West Africa. MG Edited November 25, 2006 by The Magnificent Goldberg Quote
