Tom 1960 Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 (edited) Let me also add, I was able to snatch the difficult to find Gryce recording from Newbury Comics for $16.18 including shipping. A bargain these days. Edited January 26, 2008 by Tom 1960 Quote

T.D. Niko Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 Randy Weston / Melba Liston - Volcano Blues took me about a year to realize that i couldn't find it on amazon.de because they had entered it to the system in a way that it doesn't show up when searching for Randy Weston... luckily that had also driven the price down so i got it for 2,50 euro... still some cheap copies on amazon.de, search for volcano blues, excellent upon first impression! A bargain these days. I was lucky to find a japanese mini-LP edition of the Gryce last summer (I didn't care what edition I got, I just wanted the music...) - make sure you also try your luck on "Sayin' Something", that one turned out even better to my ears! (I still have to get "The Rat Race Blues", but I figured that one was the easiest to find... Quote

JohnJ Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 Bought a new copy of the 'Sinatra in Vegas' box from the always wonderful Newbury Comics on Amazon Marketplace for $29.99 plus shipping. The list price is $79.98. Amazon Marketplace is great for box sets as overseas shipping for one CD item is $6.89, not cheap for one CD but great for a bulky box set. Quote

"Saga" is almost as good - it has come out in one of Unviersal France's digipack series (Heritage, Anniversary, whatever). I'll keep my old disc for that one... it does not have Teddy Edwards, though, who's a major bonus to me on "Volcano Blues". The 2CD set "Spirits of Our Ancestors" is likely what you should look for, next, I guess... (seems there's a one CD selection from that one, too, so be cautious!) Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 It isn't that I don't like Randy Weston - I do - a lot. It's just that I hardly ever seem to get around to buying his records Now that's not the case for Teddy Edwards. So I had better catch up with "Volcano blues" - didnt know Teddy was on this. MG Quote

mikelz777 Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 I was running errands this morning and popped into a Half-Price Book store. I couldn't resist picking up still sealed copies of Sonny Clark's My Conception, and Horace Silver's Further Explorations By The Horace Silver Quintet for $7.98 each. (Sonny Clark, Hank Mobley, Clifford Jordan, Donald Byrd, Kenny Burrell, Paul Chambers, Art Blakey, Pete LaRoca.) (Horace Silver, Art Farmer, Clifford Jordan, Teddy Kotick, Louis Hayes.) Quote
papsrus Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 Yesterday: Loved it. Loved it. Spun both back to back again early this morning. Quote

I was pretty amazed to see the Clark-thought it was OOP-but at least two of the Half Prices here had them in stock along with various titles from that BN Spanish Blue Note Collection where all the covers are blue. The Horace Silver "Further Explorations" was one of the Spanish Blue Notes with the blue tinted cover photo. I couldn't find a picture of that version so I included a picture of the regular issue in my original post. Unfortunately, when I attempted to play the Silver CD, my player would not read it. I thought it was a problem with my player but I took the disc out and looked at it to discover two long scuff marks crossing over half the disc. It's unplayable. This was a brand-new, sealed disc! I didn't even bother to look at it before putting it in my player but I'm certain my player would not and did not make those marks. They had another copy there and I hope to exchange it tomorrow.
