AndrewHill Posted January 24, 2009 Report Posted January 24, 2009 And finally, Shelly Manne & His Men -- At the Blackhawk, Vols. 1 through 5. If this is your first traversal through these, you're in for a major treat! And please take note of our British export, Victor Feldman, on piano! Absolutely! I have just vol. three but these are just amazing recordings up to Contemporary standards! Quote

The Magnificent Goldberg Posted January 25, 2009 Report Posted January 25, 2009 Where's Shelly Manne? Between Herbie Mann and Lawrence Marable. Surely between Herbie Mann & Mantovani MG Quote
Swinging Swede Posted January 25, 2009 Report Posted January 25, 2009 Between Herbie Mann and Wingy Manone actually. Quote
DMP Posted January 25, 2009 Report Posted January 25, 2009 Mantovani gets a section all to himself. But I am remiss on Wingy Manone, so give me a couple of suggestions. Quote
T.D. Posted January 25, 2009 Report Posted January 25, 2009 Haven't bought much lately, but just picked this up on eBay for under $4 incl. postage: Quote

BruceH Posted January 28, 2009 Report Posted January 28, 2009 Yesterday bought Donaldson's Lou Takes Off. Figured with Donald Byrd, Curtis Fuller, and Sonny Clark it probably wasn't chopped liver. But it's the most convincing leader date I've heard by Donaldson, who up til now I've pegged as someone who sounded better as a sideman. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted January 28, 2009 Report Posted January 28, 2009 This LP turned up today from Dusty Groove Been looking for this forever!!!!! It's not the reissue on Ubiquity - it's a sealed (well, it was sealed) copy on Bam-Boo!!!! Surely at the price I paid it can't be an original? Is someone repressing this? MG Quote
