Two CDs of singing preachers of the 1920s

This stuff was amazingly popular in the twenties. Burnett's "Fall of Nebuchadnezzar" outsold the most popular Bessie Smith records of the time by four to one. Gates was the best selling black artist of 1930, mainly because his sales didn't fall off in the depression.

I am quickly learning that this is a very expensive place to spend time.

Last week I got my first load of Japanese vinyl in the mail.

John Lewis, Grand Encounter, based on what I read in the AOW

Herbie Hancock, Maiden Voyage, my first KING, based on what I read in the Blue Note sound quality thread. A nice upgrade from my blue label UA pressing.

Johnny Griffin, The Congregation. Toshiba pressing

Today's mail

Shelly Manne, West Coast Sound

Jimmy Giuffre, The Easy Way

(The Ted Gioia book put me a BIG west coast kick)

Jacques Coursil, I think I read about this one in the Miles popularity thread. Very interesting and new to my ears, I will probably spend the most time with this one over the next month.

Although smoking crack would probably be cheaper I will go back to lurking, learning and buying records I can’t afford.

BTW, 5 more in route from Japan and 2 more from Joe at Euclid.

Picked up some well priced, OOP titles I've been trying to hunt down on the cheap. $70 for the lot. Not bad considering all but the Getz was sealed.

OOP

Billy Bauer - Plectrist (Verve Elite)

Bud Shank / Bill Perkins (West Coast Classics Series)

Verve 2-Fers

Cannonball Adderley - Sophisticated Swing: The EmArcy Small-Group Sessions (Verve 2CD)

Ben Webster - Music For Loving (Verve 2CD

Stan Getz - Stan Getz At The Shrine

Ahmad Jamal - The Legendary Okeh & Epic Recordings

I just had to share this pull... 'cause it's probably the single best 'group' of albums I've ever purchased:

Roscoe Mitchell/L-R-G, The Maze, S II Examples

Gary Burton: A Genuine Tong Funeral

Dave Brubeck: All the Things We Are

Don Cherry: Orient

John Carter: Dauwhe

Johnny Dyani Quartet: Angolian Cry

They're all new to me and they're all beautiful.
