Hardbopjazz Posted September 27 Report Posted September 27 It’s been reported on a few Facebook pages that he’s passed away today. He was 76. I’ve seen him perform live with the Vanguard Orchestra, as well as in a trio setting. Quote
Daniel A Posted September 27 Report Posted September 27 There's a long obit on his website: https://www.jim-mcneely.com Quote
sgcim Posted September 27 Report Posted September 27 I couldn't believe this when I first read it. My first reaction was HS! The VV Band is a tightly knit circle. He must have wanted to them to keep the BDC a secret.RIP Quote
Ken Dryden Posted September 27 Report Posted September 27 It is sad to learn of Jim McNeely's passing. I admired his work as a pianist, composer, bandleader, sideman arranger and soloist. I'm glad that I had the opportunity to hear him in person once, during IAJE in January 2001, where he performed most of his upcoming OmniTone CD release Group Therapy and on another occasion when he was a part of the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. He was also a delightful interview. The last time I talked to bassist Martin Wind circa 2021, he shared that Jim McNeely had recently moved to Maine to focus on compusing. Jim McNeely will be missed, but He has left a substantial legacy. Quote
mjzee Posted September 27 Report Posted September 27 I know his work from two early albums on the Gatemouth label. RIP. Quote
Gheorghe Posted September 27 Report Posted September 27 oh that´s bad news. I first heard him with Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Big Band. It was shortly before Thad and Mel separated....., and I remember that´s the first time I had heard that great pianist. Quote
mikeweil Posted September 28 Report Posted September 28 He led the jazz big band of the local radio station for several years, the news of his passing was reported on their news pages today. R.I.P. This was his farewell concert: Quote
