Paywalled article. Not a fan of Bari Weiss publications or involvement anywhere (RIP CBS news). She doesn't produce work in good faith.

But, did the article mention where these patients were getting this legal weed? Asking bc a recent study on legal hallucinogenic mushrooms focused on those products that came from gas stations which is problematic.

I don't know what I would possibly say to someone who doesn't think Bari Weiss or her media company produces work "in good faith".  And anyway that would get into politics, unfortunately.

The link is supposed to be a gift link so I don't know what happened.

The gist is that high levels of pot usage among the current population is producing a reaction in some users in which they are in utter and total physical despair, with multiple trips to emergency rooms, endless vomiting (cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS)).  For those who start to experience this, nothing cures it but quitting the weed.

Gas station shrooms, or weed, or sushi too for that matter — just inherently seems like a bad idea.

When I started college in 1970 there was a sign in my dormitory which explained that marijuana had now become much more powerful than before and warning that the new super weed was causing 'bad trips'.  55 years and the supposed authorities are still trotting out the same canards and  tropes!  For some people, using cannabis is a problem and they get into all the same gyrations as people stuck in food addictions, etc.  For most it's not that big a deal.  My advice: stay away from those vape cartridges.  You have no way of knowing what's in there and people adulterate them with things like vitamin E which is toxic to inhale like that.  Dry herb vaporizers are good.

Agreed. These products are unregulated which poses issues on several fronts, public health being a biggie. I have friends that use weed and shroom products that display self testing results, and these friends haven't had any issues. Those products are purchased at higher end boutique stores and not the quickie mart. That's why I'm wondering what products are being used in the linked article, and if there's any studies cited.

That still has a paywall unfortunately. Maybe it works for others?

If you look into this Free Press article. they cite a study that has little backing for their conclusions. Their article is based on an internet-only study with no clinical follow-up: https://www.annemergmed.com/article/S0196-0644(25)00018-6/abstract

Basically, they had an online survey where they asked a bunch of people who claim to smoke a lot of marijuana if they get sick and based on their answers, made a conclusion that marijuana smoking is the only reason for their problems.

A study like this could be done for almost any medical condition.

If someone is looking for a real medical study showing an actual link between THC and health risks, this one should do the trick: Cannabis Users Face Substantially Higher Risk of Heart Attack

It certainly got me to re-think the use of THC gummies to help me sleep. I have several friends who swear by 5 mg gummies before bed but given this new study, it's not worth it for me.

Bari Weiss and the Free Press are absolutely bad-faith trash (CBS soon to be added to the list, now that she's taken her talents there), but yeah, we can't and don't want to get into that. Putting that aside, though, I've read other articles about this same syndrome, and it seems to be an actual thing, or at least worthy of further study. That doesn't mean weed shouldn't be legal, though. People get lung cancer from smoking cigarettes, cirrhosis of the liver from excessive drinking, heart disease from eating fast food... we have far more evidence of the damage that tobacco, alcohol, and fatty food can do to people's health. Lots of people find using weed, whether via smoking or edibles, to be psychologically and physically helpful, and much less destructive to their health in general than the other substances I just listed.

Here's a non-FP article about the syndrome from the Cedars-Sinai website:

The problem with that study is it did not separate out the risk of tobacco (and other drugs) and cannabis.  So they combined all the data and found greater risks but it's unclear whether those risks are associated with cannabis or with tobacco or other drugs.  In other words this study is deeply flawed.  We know from other studies that tobacco is strongly correlated with heart attack risk.

Maybe - but I only get one shot at this thing called life and if I'm wrong, I could end up dead sooner rather than later. Since I already have heart issues, I am just a bit more concerned with a study showing even a slight increased risk of heart attack from THC use. I've already dodged cancer once. Maybe I can dodge this heart thing too. :)

How long am I going to live? Anybody know?

Random shit happens. All you can do is try to have a good day, every day, for as long as the days are there to be had. Do no harm.

To that end, at some point my days were going to be better un-high than not. But that's not necessarily going to hold true for everybody.

There's probably as many answers - and reasons for them - as there are people.

Yeah, she is trash, with no experience running a news organization like that. Unfathomable that what was once the gold standard in news coverage has come to this.

I have absolutely no quarrel with that.  Weed is not for everybody.  On the other hand I have an 85 year old friend who has truly terrible arthritis.  All over the place. Scary looking. Doctors asked him how he manages with this and he used to tell them he smokes weed every day.  Keep doing it, they told him.  Recently he had shingles and gout.  The poor fellow is a mess and can't use cannabis as much but he told me how much he liked some blue dream I gave him.

I have read that THC can affect the heart (makes your heart beat faster) as well as cause an increase in blood pressure. As the jury is still out whether I have high blood pressure, I’ve forsworn any smoking.

There is a relationship between heart rate and blood pressure.  When cannabis lowers blood pressure - which it does - the heart speeds up.  If you use it a lot the effect - lower pressure and faster pulse - diminishes.

I don’t, maybe once a week recently. Prior to that probably hadn’t smoked in a year or so.

How about the consequences of legal sports betting?

The money you lose will increase your heart rate, especially if your wife yells at you.  I have never bet.
