although you probably will be able to piece together much of it from other sources.

Not sure about that. It seems that at least half the set is no longer available on cd. And what you can find is sold at high prices.

In that case, the defense rests. Act now. :g

Comes down to money.

What my wallet can't afford, I do not need.

On the other hand, you could just cut back a bit on the light beer for a while (it's not like you can really taste that shit, anyway).

Yeah, I got his set a week ago and have so far (so good) played the 3 first discs. I just love it. Very very nice :D

I'm glad I did not miss it.

i might have zero JJJ cds in my collection.....

You should also try to pick up the 2 "Eminent Jay Jay" CDs on Blue Note:

These recordings are a bit earlier than those on the Mosaic set, and also include some great sidemen, including Clifford Brown. :tup

Maybe you could get someone tp make you a B3 comp with JOS on it :w:D

In fact, maybe there's already one with your name on it!!

Nahhhhhh. I don't think there's anyone here who's into him.

I agree with Ron. In addition, everything he recorded with Kai Winding is also recommended.

This is a good strat: JnK.jpg

While in school, a room mate called these "the Enema-ed JJ Johnson".

Indeed, I actually have these two CD's filed with the Clifford Brown in my collection.

I'd think that the Johnson Mosaic, when it finally does time out, will eventually be one of those sets that fetches absurd* prices on eBay.

* or ridiculous, insane, inflated ... you name it

Hmmm.... I'd think the exact opposite -- 7,500 copies, been on the endangered list for at least a year now (maybe more?), been in print for quite a long time now...

Of course, what really matters, is that this music ends up in the hands of those that really appreciate it, as opposed to speculators...:(

Absolutely.

I guess I was just naively thinking: "The music's so good, and if it's out-of-print, people will pay anything for it!" (Insert optional dork laugh.)

Posted

Yes. The music is indeed quite good! :)

I think there will always be an (inflated) eBay market for OOP Mosaics, if only for those (like myself) that become interested in various sets long after they're gone.

I'm completely shocked by the $ amounts that the (fairly recently) OOP Morgan/Shorter set is fetching. I was lucky enough to have purchased that one before it was gone -- but I can say confidently that there is no way I would pay $200+ for that set now. It's good... but THAT good?? :o (The Andrew Hill set is another matter entirely!)

The JJ, however, has been in print for so long that I would hope that everybody that wants a copy already has one.

BUT, I can't say I'd be surprised if you are right. OOP Mosaics are instantly more valuable than in-print titles, and eBay prices have never made any sense to me!
