  1. I've got the chance to listen to this BFT quite a bit this month. I don't have much for comments, just some preferences. I've probably said before that I'm a sucker for solo piano, so I enjoyed all three of those tracks, track 1 probably most. The Caravan, I think, track really sounded familiar. Usually that means it is somebody I've never even heard of. Piano improv really amazes me. My folks offered to get me piano lessons when I was a kid but I just wanted to go out an play ball. Wish I could get a do-over on that one. Track 2 is the one I am most looking forward to finding out. No point of reference here but I really like it. I can't say that track 3 so much appeals to me but listening to it on the stationary bike at the gym, I noticed I was peddling faster. So it had some affect on me. I'm pretty sure I know tracks 9 and 10 and they are actually my favorites of the BFT. I really got into track 9 from the start; great tune, nice group and playing, bass is really good. Second time through I payed more attention to the trumpet and well, that is Lester Bowie and of coarse AEOC. Probably one of the ECM albums. If it is Nice Guys or Full Force I'm going to listen to the whole album tonight. If something else, I guess I will try to get it. Track 10 is the opening cut from Air Lore. Great album, band and tunes. Great bass on this one too. Thanks a lot. Enjoyed this listen.
  2. Love it. Sadly, I don't even feel guilty.
  3. Why do you avoid their LPs? I avoid LPs in general just because I prefer CDs and listen to 99% of my music in the kitchen or in the car. But I also find NB LPs (and new vinyl in general) to be overpriced. I will get the Convergence album but it will run me more than $25 and I think that's both unfeasible and a little nuts. I agree that Tribal Ghost is great. I hear what you are saying about the price but sometimes I splurge a little. Plus I really do like to play records. Way back when I grudingly bought a CD player when you couldn't get LPs anymore and now some stuff is only on LPs. Go figure.
  4. Thanks for the response. I asked because I just put in an order for this one: Tchicai/McBee/Fewell/Kohlhase/Hart - "Tribal Ghost". My main question was the short play time (even for a LP) but the clips I heard were just so darn good. I will try to get the Convergence Quartet also. A favorite group of mine.
  5. May I have a download please. You always present some interesting music. I would like to go ahead and make the first guess....Sun Ra.
  6. Interesting topic for me. I would add Michiel Braam's larger groups to the Dutch recs, especially the album "Growing Pains".
  7. There is another one I don't have. : 0 )
  8. THE Schlippenbach? No. 50th Birthday Concert, Hunting The Snake, or Elf Bagatellen are probably most essential, but this is a wonderful record indeed. Their studio albums have a certain calm to them that I enjoy sometimes as a contrast to their (awesomely) pummeling live performances. Thanks. Always amazed by how much I haven't heard.
  9. Thanks very much for your efforts. I've been playing to the Hawkins/Moholo-Moholo album several times the last week because I apparently don't listen to it enough. Terrific album. Question; is this the Shippenbach album you would recommend? All I really know is Pakistani Pomade.
  10. I thought about Nate Wooley when first listening to track 9 but after your comments, I think it might be. If so, a very fine album. It looks like I have 5 or 6 of these albums so far but only recognized 2 or 3. Not a good percentage.
  11. So, Track 7 is not my favorite overall but that is a pretty darn good drummer. I was liking Track 8 ok and then “yikes”, I normally at least get a smile out of these kind of vocals but this one not so much. For some reason I liked Track 9 a lot more than the earlier one. I'm not sure if I would like an entire solo album but this was very interesting. Track 11. Now you are talking. Nothing bad about this. Liked the cello and bass. Track 12. Great ending piece. Of coarse the von Schlippenbach Trio comes to mind but you wouldn't be that obvious, would you? Hopefully this get an ID before the end of the month. Favorite track along with #1 and the Clusone Trio. By the by, track 1 inspired me to hear some Joe McPhee this morning. Listening to “Oleo” and what do you know.
  12. This link worked great, thanks. I listened a little while doing the stationary bike this morning and liked what I heard. A couple comments. Track 1 for me is a winner right out of the box. The horn player on the left and the over all feel of the piece say Joe McPhee to me. I get a spiritual feeling from some of his music. I'm not a church goer anymore but I like to listen to Joe McPhee on Sunday mornings. Track 2. First of all, I had to turn up the volume and listen a second time. Subtly and very pretty stuff. I have listened to this album so many times that I knew Track 3 immediately. I'd rather be a hammer than a nail and outside of Walt Dickerson, I'd rather listen to the Clusone Trio than anybody. Any track from this album would be great on a BFT. I'll just say that Track 4 is nice playing. The drummer is the best part of Track 5 for me. Track 6. I was thinking this is ok and then the percussion came in and for me it hit another gear. I like this very much. Later.
  13. I think that Diamond Curtain Wall Quintet is playing at Duke University sometime toward the end of Feb. also.
  14. Well, the more adventurous is my style as well and I enjoyed your last BFT, so please count me in.
  15. Thanks for the fun listen, Alex. I'm not good at putting my thoughts on music into words but I did really like quite a number of these tracks. I have a hard time not liking a version of “St. Louis Blues” or “Dr. Jazz” but the ones you've presented are obviously top shelf. Not much more can be said about that. Without going through everything while I write, I would say my favorite tracks are 20 through 23. I'm normally not a real vocal fan but track 20 was great. I'm really not in these BFTs to try for IDs but even a poser like me could recognize some things here. One note, I had a version of track 3 (I think) that was by David Grisman with Stephane Grappelli on my last BFT. That violin sure does sound familiar. Good track.

  19. Have and like it! Esp. Sun Ra's piano playing. Thanks everyone. I am keen to hear the 1960's stuff first, so will try to get "Lawrence" and "Unity". So, I agree with the SteepleChase comments. But if you are looking to the 1960's, consider "To My Queen", which I think is his most creative 1960's album. Plus you get a pretty good dose of Andrew Hill which is never bad. Plus to me the vibes/bass duet track kind of shows where his later style is going.
  20. I go with a 1 on your survey only because you don't have any lower numbers. Which is why I would like to have a listen. A download would be great, thanks.
  21. So, please forgive me if this has been previously been asked and answered; Any chance "People In Sorrow" might get a reissue?
