  1. I keep pursuing! There is hardly an end to any of it. I don't necessarily view myself as a completist. . . I'm certainly not an "object worshipper" type of completist, you know, have to have the JRVGs with obi in the original plastic slipcover all displayed in a nice little box or case. I want the music in the best sound I don't care how it looks. I'm buying and selling all the time. It's sort of a way of making my life busier than it would have been otherwise, I need that. As wesbed says: it's exciting, it's educational, it's not harmful. I HAVE actually been scaling back in purchases for fiscal reasons, and fitting rather fidgetily into that new situation. And I have been finding new stuff. . . I mean more Monk, more Miles, more of the music of the folk that I hit a brick wall on at some point . . . it's as if there is never an end, so to be a completist is an impossible thing. . . . I don't feel as if I'm a completist so much as I am always seeking the new music out there of my favorites, and always finding new favorites. . . . In that respect, life is good.
  2. I really don't count as I don't play much for years and years now. . . . But I change mine when they won't stay in tune or one breaks, whichever comes first (it's a tossup).
  3. I want to just say "Music that I love." I could be persuaded to say "Music that I love, born of alleys both tin pan and funky." . . . or something like dat.
  4. There are advanced promo copies of Ellington cds to come (Blues in Orbit, Piano in Background, Piano in Foreground) out there from Columbia as factory cdrs; I've had cdrs of other Columbia releases show up in advance from Columbia in cdr format as well. . . . So the cdr format is not prohibitive that they came from Columbia. Those all came in either jewel cases with a factory printed back card insert with details, or cardboard sleeves with a sticker with details. . . . None of these were "Reference Copies" however. I would think a reference copy would be an internally circulated copy and may have sketchy documentation. . . . I've heard the music. It sounds fantastic!
  5. Hey, it's understandable to be feeling carried away, I was when I first saw evidence that these were out (and circulating) a few months ago!
  6. I think the lp was like that too! I've had this on an lp burn for several years, and it is that way as well. I've kept the lp burn along with the new cd. . . the lp sounds a bit better to my ears, which I was a little surprised to find!
  7. Actually, advance promo copies seem to have been out for months. . . so I'm not sure this is an indicator of any imminent release, though I'm wanting to believe it is! Great stuff! GONNA BE A GREAT SET!

I know what you mean. On the plus side, this is different, both the material and the treatment of the material are different for a Merrill date. And on another positive side, Merrill's singing is very solid. No surprise there! And it is the first time I've heard her voice overdubbed in harmony. . . which is interesting. I think I am going to grow into liking this one as I spin it more and more, and the sound is very good indeed.

I'm still processing it. . . . It is a wonderful sounding cd; this new XRCD24 process sure yields a bright but full presentation. If you are a Beatles fan, this is good stuff. I'm not much of a Beatles fan, but I like some of these arrangements a lot. . . and Helen sings well, and it is interesting to hear her vocals overdubbed in background role and chorus role for her as well. Some nice guitar and bass and drums by Japanese accompanists. . . this one rocks a bit on about half the tunes.
  10. Way out of print. . . out of print five years? More?
  11. Thanks for the info Jim. I am not up on my model numbers, but I could probably identify it in the dark! Especially if it was plugged in! I really like guitars. . . I have tried a few four string models . . . I just always miss the other two strings. My heart is with pianos though. . . . Maybe those keyboards are in my blood; I have organ builders in my family history.
  12. What Chuck says for sure. You may well be THE MAN for THE JOB!
  13. I haven't handled many archtops. From recordings, I think I'd like to have one like Jimmy Gourley and a few other cats played. . . sort of a Charlie Christian like model. . . . Jim R knows what I mean. I like the rich and thick sound that they make. . . . I love the players that use them. The only guitar I've owned since the early eighties though is an Ovation Breadwinner, a heavy solid bodied guitar with a weird finish that I love the neck of and the sound. . . but no archtop!
  14. That Prestige set has so much variety in it! I love some of the oddball sessions (okay, that's just my take on them) like Dakar, Wheelin' and Dealin', the Hope session. . . . Everytime I grab a disc from that set I tell myself I should listen to it more often!
  15. I have to say I'm sort of just the opposite, I think their original pop stuff is trite, and I really like the bluesiest and raunchiest of their material, including their covers, better; I think their HEARTS were in that. Growing up when I did you got burned out on even the obscure stuff. . . . I really just can't bear anything that got radio play any longer; I can play what I want to back in my head, and there's darned little of that, and there's so much in my head I wish I could get out! I'm with you Rooster almost in one way: Exile is the only cd I have, and there are some lps inside a Motorola console stereo that I can't get to and that is just fine. . . . I'd be tempted to get Sticky Fingers and Let It Bleed one day, and that would suit me for the Stones. "Talk is Cheap" I haven't heard for a long time, but remember it with fondness.
  16. It's on life support, and people are looking for a living will document. . . .
  17. Understood. Take about half the Beatles, for example! Silly stuff! Some people like it for some reason. I'd rather listen to Monchur!
  18. Hey Brandon, lots of other stuff sounds silly to me that you don't seem to think is silly, res gustibus non disputandae sunt!
  19. As an outcast I had to vote for Exile.
  20. I wonder if they are still using scans of actual original lps for covers of this series? (I was thinking that the were, still).
  21. I'm not really sure that the previous discussion decided that. . . anyway, no one seems to know yet! Maybe Kevin B. has heard from Cuscuna but he hasn't elaborated. . . .
  22. I had to overhear a very misinformed long rant about the French from one of those myopic young Republicans this town has a lot of . . . including a lot of misinformation that must be travelling around about the Versailles treaty and even mentioning Napoleanic times! It was pure venomous racism, though this chump had NO CLUE that he was a racist. I just don't get this holier than thou attitude of the times at least in my neck of the wood by propaganda swallowing reactionaries! But then. . . it's probably just always there since Sumer.

I've been thinking about this proposed Select since you mentioned it. . . and can't imagine what they could include that was the right size. . . .
  24. Very good movie. I would say this is a Phil Dickian sort of story (the elements of memory manipulation, and I love the sort of oblique reference to Time Out of Joints paper slips. . .that may simply be my imagination) and a very realistic depiction of what makes relationships work or not work as far as I'm concerned. And genuinely funny, and decidedly well acted by all cast members. Very impressive; the best film from this write yet in my opinion.
