  1. Wow, that Ellington looks great!

    Chicago

One of my first shows in America was a stadium show of Chicago from the same general time frame as the Carnegie Hall box. It was pretty cool for me then. Not as cool as seeing Santana in London was a year before that but what would be?
  3. Janet Leigh in color. . . . HMMH. . . .
  4. The MLW 10" material is also part of the wonderful Chronogical Classics 1346, Mary Lou Williams 1951-1953. Thank goodness for these MLW Classics.
  5. It's a damned good one in my opinion. Hard to say in a career that spanned more than fifty years what is "one of his best." There were so many masterworks within different periods. This was a great show though, and glad it was captured for us all to enjoy!
  6. I don't have it and I long ago dispensed with my old Bluebird box (went with the Jazz Tribune "Black and White" discs and with Classics discs) but it's basically a near identical box as far as I can tell. The sound is going to be MUCH better. There are a few instances of a "spitting distortion" that bother a few but to my ears the sound is very very good.
  7. Wayne Shorter, "Alegria." I don't really like "Footprints," and I'm not expecting much, but the price is right.
  8. I just saw the last ten minutes play back on tape. It sure looked like a boring night. I really could care less about Bo or Carrie. Not surprised Carrie won, but I think she's just plain mediocre, not sexy, not a great singer. UGH. And yes that WAS the G Man! A new tv low!
  9. I like the RCA Burtons, don't know the ECMs. Swallow's ebass work doesn't bother me. At all. I think Burton's playing is wonderful on these as well. I guess it's just different strokes for different folks.
  10. Definitely get the "Never No Lament," and wait for the eventual release of the earlier material in a set. I differ from 'the conventional wisdom' somewhat in that I prefer to hear the twenties and early thirties Duke to the Blanton-Webster era and early forties in general Duke. I love the latter, but the former just seems monumentally important AND eternally enjoyable to me.
  11. Too bad! 33 minutes in this movie really started to KICK ASS~!
  12. JohnJ, Jessica is "fine" in this in several different ways. Sue Storm, come on down!
  13. On their site they mention the extra cd is no longer available. Whew! I was going to have buyers remorse (buying it elsewhere) if it were!
  14. Hmmmm. . . . I sure wish I could.
  15. Possibly right on the money too, depending on personal tastes!
  16. After reading about this in the GD thread at AAJ, I decided to order this set this morning. I'm sure it's pretty darned good!
  17. I DON'T know. I would have wanted that FIRST, but we got the "third period," we got the "Live and Rare" (including some material not in the box set, mostly "talkin' Duke") and then we got the real money-maker (I would think) the Blanton-Webster material. Perhaps they feel there is little commercial potential in this material based on past sales, etc.?
  18. Totally agree about the amazing sound quality. The original RCA Bluebird cds were too "scrubbed." Not bad, but when I discovered the great sound on the Chronogical Classics versions of this material, I dropped the Bluebirds. But this Centennial remastering is truly superb for the first decade!
  19. Desert Island stuff for me too, always something new and fresh to hear! I think Ray that you will eventually be able to get all the material in this set separately . . . may take another decade . . . but they'll bring it out. I would have thought that the earliest material would come out by now. . . . But it will. In this set the sound on this material is phenomenal!
  20. Many many more happy ones!
  21. Personally I think she's among the most beautiful actresses in the business these days and I'm glad they filmed many angles and aspects of her! (And that voice!)
  22. Yeah, just illegal when run through the Macero "doubler" device!" DAMN!
  23. Honestly, I have NOT been able to detect a pattern.
  24. I think you did fine. I bought mine when it first came out, and the best price I found was . .. 300 bucks. So enjoy the incredible music within!
  25. I had taped the CSI finale, and finally got to watch it last night. Gorshin had a rather small bit, about two minutes total on the screen, where he was sitting around with one other celeb and the casino-owner father of "Catherine" (Marge Helgenberger). He did a few impressions and spoke a half dozen lines. They dedicated the show to him. It was an interesting episode in other ways. . . . Tarantino-esque and decidedly a little outside the norm for CSI.
