Yeah, I'd like to see Phil Napolean and Wingy Manone Capitol twofers!
  3. Which may mean he may have needed a bigger place!
  4. Yes, that Coleman Hawkins dvd is very good. . . nice to have Lester on there. Thanks for the recap of all the Billie appearances.
  5. No, I haven't had a chance. . .
  6. Okay, not what you asked. An alternate name though. . .Keiko, the certainly lady-like late wife of Wayne Shorter.
  7. Yesterday, after discovering this weekend that my old lps of Chopin material are annoyingly worn, I ordered the following from yourmusic.com while things are still $4.99: Angela Hewitt: Chopin, Nocturnes Quantity: 1 Price: $9.98 Arthur Rubinstein: Chopin, Ballades & Scherzos (SACD Hybrid) Quantity: 1 Price: $4.99 Arthur Rubinstein: Chopin: Waltzes & Impromptus Quantity: 1 Price: $4.99 Arthur Rubinstein: Chopin, 51 Mazurkas Quantity: 1 Price: $9.98 Murray Perahia: Chopin, 24 Etudes (Expanded Edition) Quantity: 1 Price: $4.99
  8. Let's see I bought the original cd, the JRVG. . . I'll certainly get this new Hope as well! B-) Hope fascinates me. That trio from the neighborhood, Monk, Powell and Hope, can't be beat!

There were a number of great trumpeters those days. Ruben Reeves always gasses me. Bubber. . . wow. Bubber was something else. I have all the Jabbo I've been able to find. Berigan came along and amazed. Jack Purvis. Johnny Dunn. Wingy Manone. I really enjoy the music of this time period. So fun and full of energy and life!
  10. I hope they use the McLean, cuz I'm likely to like it more than their new idea. . . .
  11. Yes, both the Miles box set and the queues seem to be restored. Spend away! (They were probably busy removing the metal spines from the box sets).
  12. Glad I could find all the Chopin I needed earlier! They're trying to stop us all from saving that one dollar a disc the next few days!
  13. Something IS funny. A lot of titles are not there any longer, from the Jack Johnson and Seven Steps boxes, to some Clapton and Traffic titles, etc.
  14. I like it just fine. I like Mendes of this vintage and earlier. It's short and sweet!
  15. Well, won't let me add to my list either. But did let me add to my cart. Added a whole bunch of Chopin before my 4.99 deal expired!
  16. Weird. I went from 19 . . . to ONE. Ah well. Maybe they'll all show up on my porch in a big box!
  17. I guess he got to Chicago some other way. . . .

It's not true. Red was recorded about the same time as Bix. . not years afterwards. And he had more professional band experience before he was recorded than Bix did. Influenced, yes, particularly phrasing. But a disciple? That is certainly not the word I would choose.
  19. What's the old saying? "A stirred pot always boils?"

Some overlap with the first one I recommended, but man this is a good one.

Personally, I don't view him as a Bix disciple. He was pretty "formed" before he would have been able to idolize Bix, and yes he did copy some of the sound perhaps but he was essentiall different. Just how I hear it.

Three great cds! With Red I think you really have to like the music of the twenties and early thirties and be able to cope with the different sonics these present. To my ears his stuff from the forties on up just wasn't quite as exciting to listen to. . . there are a few moments but. . . .

If you can find it, this one is great! This one is very good!
