  1. I could certainly imagine this happening as I had seen it chronicled: i.e. at the last moment Miles phoned Douglas demanding 50 large upfront and Douglas turning that down. He didn't ever have to consult with Jimi about the money, I think his managers were quite used to not consulting him about the money, keeping him in the dark that way, and of course Jimi's own attitude probably aided that. Maybe Miles had a talk with his wife and didn't want to show?
  2. I've had both. . . ended up selling the Blue Note box because I felt the Mosaic cds sounded a hair better, and the booklet was more than a hair better!
  3. That's correct if you define the booklet/accompanying essays as part of the packaging; the written material accompanying each is different, as well as the artwork and packaging.
  4. It IS a moot point. And somehow, I just can't imagine it. And I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't GUESS it.
  5. I can recommend exploring recordings on the Jazz Oracle label, the Timeless label and the Retrieval label of twenties recordings; you'll get good notes and great sound. Jazz Oracle http://www.timelessjazz.com/shop/default.p...0b944fae80f74b9 There are also good recordings available on Columbia, RCA Bluebird, Decca GRP, The Old Masters, Swingtime and many other labels.
  6. Welcome! I think if you want to learn about jazz in the twenties there is a wealth of information out there on the internet. Some key figures to seek out and study to would be King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Bix Beiderbecke, Frank Trumbauer, Eddie Lang, Paul Whiteman, Red Nichols, Adrian Rolini, Fletcher Henderson, James P. Johnson, Jelly Roll Morton. There are many other important figures as well. Enjoy the search!

    Dave Burrell

Fan of Burrell, here! Thanks for posting that interview Laton.
  8. "A very cool set from Lee." Yes, indeed! One of the first Verve Konitz sessions I ever heard. I've noticed that there is a lot of unissued Verve Konitz sessions from this general time frame. . . sure wish these would come out!
  9. Well, it did introduce unedited material then before it was remastered and available in the three subsequent reissues. . . . So in that sense it did make a contribution (Dynasty had not been released on cd before this, so at some point this was someone's idea of what a Dynasty cd should be . . . . NOT mine!)
  10. Hope they have more J. R. T. Davies remasterings in the can still. . . We're going to really miss that guy more as time passes I think.
  11. Volume 4 is good too. Except for some great soloing by some members that was fun to hear from the start, this band seemed to get better as it went along. I just realized I now have all the Jazz Oracles. Sheesh that was an expensive collecting. . . but a collection well worth having.

I didn't feel the Rudd was really bad. . . just not really good. And the two others I've listened to so far, the Shepp and the Wright, have quite good sound (the Shepp sounds really really good to my ears!)
  13. That's two words. There were some other good players in this band as well, as you know. . . .
  14. ??? I know that there was a cd "The Shoe's of the Fisherman's Wife are some Jive Ass Slippers" that had items from "Dynasty" and "Ah Um" and some alternate material; nothing that hasn't been out before or since actually. . . .
  15. I like Volume 5 a lot as well. I have all of the volumes, including the Whooppee Makers ones, but that is not the full band. . . . I'd agree: try Volume 5 with some Jack vocals.

Please don't hold it for me Tony. . . I'm way over extended at the moment. Flurin, thanks for weighing in re: the Shepp defect. Guess it's just my copy!

    Charlie Rouse

Hi Elis. Must have been great to see Sphere at that time! Actually, Paul Jeffrey replaced Rouse as the regular saxophonist in the final years of Monk's career. . . but I bet Rouse wasn't too far away . . . . I am not sure that any of Jeffrey's work with Monk has made it to cd, though recently it was reported that he turned in over 20 hours of tapes to the Monk family of his participation with Monk, so perhaps one day soon! He brought a different feel to the music. . . he did well in Rouse's chair!
  18. My monthly choice, the Mendes, has shipped!
  19. I bought that one the minute I read, on this board, that yourmusic had it! What a great reissue (for five bucks!) I also have a twofer European copy that has Seashells on it. . . but I wanted to have this remastered version; both sound really good but it is nice to have as a single. I love the original session; the second session is very good but the first session KILLS.

The "Rat" is a thread here on the board that was begun as a thread about the album "The Funny Rat" and has become an avant garde music thread that keeps going and going and going.

I agree, terrific sound, great sound stage and presence of the instruments. I like the disc a LOT.

Thanks for reporting that. In the last few minutes of the disc mine stops and then starts and then stops and then starts then won't play through to the end. A manufacturing defect I suppose. I have to play it on all my burners and players and see if it works on any. I so far have only played it on my Decware modified (tubed output stage added taken off the DAC chip) Sony 685 player; this machine however usually plays everything.

  24. The bulk of these are drawn from the "Jazz in Paris" series of cds from Gitanes (Universal), arranged around a theme for the sets. There is reported to be a few, A FEW, tracks that did not appear in the "Jazz in Paris" series, but I for one don't know what those tracks are. There is going to be predominantly studio but some live tracks here from an assortment of musicians both French, from other European countries, and Americans.
  25. I don't know what section Tarantino guest directed either. .. . If I could guess I would guess the sequence with Dwight and a dead Jack Rafferty on the way to the Tar Pits and maybe into the Tar Pits? Just a guess!
