  1. I think this set timed out. One of these days soon I have to shove aside the newly purchased material I'm swimming through and listen to this again. I really do like this set. One has to like the clarinet to really enjoy it. And you have to like that sort of cool and clever mode that Jimmy has of writing and making sound. There's a LOT of variety in this set really . . . . Ensembles vary in size and instrumentation and there are a variety of material used as building blocks as well. Highlights for me are the trio mateiral and the material with Pee Wee Russell.
  2. I have the original lps of these sessions and man it's some good music!
  3. What Mark said.
  4. I'm most excited about Volume One, which I think is stupendous in its variety and the excitement in the material and sound. Sound is really good on this set! Though Volume Two. . . well that would be second on my list! So I might have it one day!

    Stevie Wonder

I would very much like to see expanded versions of "Talking Book" and "Innervisions" . . . . Not sure why they aren't out there. Possibly, Stevie has a say and says not. Hey, if Ray Charles is a genius, Stevie Wonder is. I think the answer to that depends on a number of factors for many people. They're shining lights in my musical universe!
  6. jazzhound, your experience with the consistency of solid state equipment does not match mine. You're right, there can be great differences in tubes from manufacturer to manufacturer and type to type. Allows you to dial in and tailor sound. Ah, it's nice to know that we'll consistently disagree!
  7. Okay, your opinion. Me, I'm enjoying the heck out of this, it's more than "synthesized bass and crappy electronic percussion" to my ears, it's new, not stuck in the past.
  8. If you can or have to ask, sell and buy new at the new destination. I couldn't even pose the question as 90% of our furniture is handpicked by my wife or from her family. . . and they have been moved before and they will be moved next time we move! I'd ship my bed as well; bought an all latex bed, love it, don't want to replace it, should last for many many more years.

    Ellington Suites

Ray Nance. . .more and more that guy is an indispensible part of my listening world!
  10. Thanks!
  11. Yes, likewise to Wes, I won't be much help. I actually prefer all the additional material to the original Jack Johnson lp by a margin--if asked I would give up that final disc before any other. As Wes does I enjoy the flow of the sessions and the variety. The Pascoal and "The Mask" pieces are my favorites, but I really dig the different takes of "Willie Nelson" etc. At yourmusic.com prices I'd recommend the box set and find the space, though I know you're already on your different course.
  12. My advice, don't even smoke cloves. It seemed to me the dozen or so times I FAILED to quit smoking was that even one smoke just reinforces the urges and desires. I finally did quit, and it is nearly fifteen full years now that I have been not smoking, but I had to just cold turkey STOP. That was what I did. My wife helped me a lot. She put up with my stress and bitchiness and did a lot to relieve it. I owe her a big debt of gratitude. So step one: don't satisfy any of your cravings to smoke if you really want to stop. I don't know anyone who really was successful by tapering off and/or substituting. Another thing that helps: wash every scrap of your clothing or anything of fabric you can. Get the smell of smoke out of it. Smelling smoke cues in the urges and cravings. . . . Stay away from people who smoke as much as possible. I had to stay away from BARS. Now it's not so necessary as there are fewer bars that are filled with smoke; I know YOU can't stay away because of the gigging thing. I had just given up on the gigging thing so I didn't have that excuse and temptation.
  13. Yes, that's true. Quite a book.
  14. That new one looks GOOD.
  15. fent, I remember seeing TWO Spanish Blue Notes of Gilberto; it appears they split them into two cds. . . . But I haven't seen either available in a long time.
  16. I think you can trust VS . . . they may be scrubbed a little with noise reduction, but probably not too badly. Looks like a good deal from cdu for Cash fans!
  17. I'm way too juice dehydrated to say much of anything. . . .
  18. Yes figures, I get footnoted twice in a book and it gets cut out! This was available for about that price in hardback through Daedalus for some time but I believe that bird has flown. . . .
  19. Excellent job Jim; some great music in there on those that I have heard! Also, the Paul Winters were reissued on Collectables much cheaper than the Japanese versions!
  20. Well, I got the four new box sets today. I couldn't resist the preorder price from cduniverse; I got them all for less than ninety dollars total. And as Clem has noted elsewhere. . . they are spectacular reissues. Beautiful boxes, beautiful booklets, beautiful digipaks, beautiful sound. . . . And it appears that there is quite a bit of material from 78s that are not within the 102 other cd releases. Really, when you hold these in your hands you just marvel at their organized beauty. Some spectacular photos and paintings and handbills and song sheets and. . . . Going to be slowly savoring these for some time!
