  1. I'll be in Delray for a few days in mid November, but nobody is playing there then. I'd go see Fred Hersch, if I were you, Dan.
  2. Todd Barkan is the New Programming Director at the Arts Garage. He and his wife are moving down soon. Story here
  3. I'll have to see this when it comes around here. Here's one of my favorite photos of Clark Terry that I took:
  4. That link leads to a "page not available" thingie ... care to quote if you can access it? German Wiki offers July 7 as date of death, linking this as source: http://obituaries.braggfuneralhome.com/mr-francis-frankie-dunlop-obituary/ I just clicked on it and it went right to Nasar's Facebook page. He's a great drummer, also.
  5. I believe he passed away on the 4th of July. His cousin drummer Nasar Abadey confirmed.
  6. I read “Do Not Sell at Any Price” last week and it has some nice moments along with some rather sophomoric fluff like when she takes scuba lessons and dives next to the Paramount plant looking for 78's that may have been tosses into the river. Good article/review.
  7. Joe Romano sure got around and was in and out of Vegas around that time, and certainly So. California also. I'm not sure about San Diego, though.
  8. Yes Allen, the LP has significantly better sound that the cd. How could they manage to screw up these things?
  9. http://loves-holiday.com/post/79086750712/wildflower-hank-crawford
  10. "Originally called Bennie Ross Crawford, Jr., he picked up the name “Hank” while in college, as he was said to play like another saxophonist named Hank O’Day."
  11. These photos of mine are from the week before the recording.
  12. http://blogs.indiewire.com/shadowandact/interview-don-cheadle-says-zoe-saldana-is-out-of-miles-davis-biopic-almost-all-of-davis-music-will-be-used-in-the-film No music from the period (Agartha), relationship with Frances Taylor as a anchor (she had fled years before), something about a White Boy stealing his music and a Rolling Stone reporter. What a mess!
  13. Because by 1946 he was under contract to Musicraft.
  14. There's a lot of nice guys in this music, but Joe LaBarbera is a Prince.
  15. jhoots lives in a area with a very, very nice and interesting Arts scene.
  16. Get this one, of you can find it:
  17. I loved the Fred Hersh interview: "At the end of the two weeks, I said to Art, “I really love your playing, but if this is the rhythm section you’re going to go with, I’m afraid I’m just going to step out.” And he thought about it, and he said, “Well, who would you choose?” And I said “Let me think about it.”' I had dinner with Fred and his trio a few years ago and as was reminiscing with him about groups I'd seen him with he told me this same story. He was surprised and flattered that Art Farmer would let him, at such a young age, pick his section mates. By the way, he's talking about Vishnu Wood and Walter Bolden. Howard Mandel is not only a ass, but a coward, too.
  18. I saw Fading Gigolo also a couple of weeks ago. Liked the movie and was pleasantly surprise with the Ammons music. Entire song as well (Canadian Sunset) !
  19. Nice! Paul Bollenback on guitar.
  20. These labels are run by Joe Fields and his son, Barney. They have quite a factory going. I enjoy some of their releases.
