Spanish Blue Note Series

Recommended Posts

I recently saw someone selling some very unusual Blue Note CDs from Spain on ebay. I missed placing a bid on them but would like to know if following titles are still available from Blue Note in Spain:

Hank Mobley - Poppin'

Blue Mitchell - Boss Horn

How is the sound quality on the Spanish Blue Notes

Appreciate any information regarding availability and quality of these CDs.

Thanks.

I received a mailing today from Spain from an outfit called Jazzmessengers which features a three page spread on these Blue Note titles. They are listed for 5.95 Euro each.

Someone mentioned that this is the same company that used to be planetmusic, so I am more than skeptical. I am intrigued by the fact that next they are listed under Blue Note/Time-Life Records. They can be reached by email at info@jazzmessengers.com. I would also be interested if anyone else can shine more light on this topic.

Another item of interest is a 10 CD box "The Complete Columbia Golden Years Recordings of Billie Holiday" This looks like a knock-off of the set that was recently releaed here by Legacy. This is advertised in the same circular under the Nagel Heyer label new releases for 79.95

If y'all take a look at the Miscellaneous Music Forum section, and scroll down, there's a thread about the now defunct Planet Music and the jazz messengers group. Apparently, some people got burned by them going out of business so abruptly.

I just looked and there's a couple of these on Ebay from a spanish seller named spanichi.

I bought several of these a few years back - one of them was Hub Cap if I am not mistaken. Seemed like official product, sound was fine. They were gatefold covers and yeah, the colors were "darkened" somewhat. I viewed it as a nice way to fill in some titles I wanted but missed in the US. Seems like both Poppin' and Boss Horn would be nice scores, particularly at that price.

I posted a hastily typed list of selected Time Life Blue Note highlights in this thread. They are very blue indeed and reported to be taken from the TOCJ masters.

BTW, before we get into blanket dissing of all European labels, Nagel Heyer are a respected and legitimate label. They currently do not list the Holiday on their website and I am not convinced that the attribution to Nagel Heyer in the catalog is correct.

So yes, be suspicious of this set... but please don't blame the dedicated promoters of new trad over at Nagel Heyer!

Thanks for calling my attention to the link. Looks as if they may have split the original cd into two volumes.

RE: the TOCJ remastering possibility: all I know is that the Leo Parker I have sounds as if it were a TOCJ, and that it is not the same remastering (and doesn't have the alternate) of the early US version.

Is this Jazzmessengers-formerly Planet Jazz- owned by the folks that own Blue Moon/Fresh Sound?

I could not find the URL for jazzmessengers so I went into the Blue Moon site and found their Spanish Blue note re-issues. The same ones mentioned in this thread were listed there for 5.75 euro.

I found "Cliff Jordan" (as opposed to "Cliff Craft") a 1957 session in which Lee Morgan, John Jenkins, and others play on. Was this session only issued as a TOCJ? I've never seen it mentioned as any other title.

5.75 euro was a great price but they wanted 11.75 euro as shipping :o

Sounded a little outrageous to me!!!

Is "Cliff Jordan" definetely worth getting?

I have ordered from these guys before - some of the Fresh Sounds New Talent stuff. They seem to be legit and reliable. I just placed an order for some of "blue hue" BNs plus the 2CD live Wes Mongomery and a couple of others. Snagged 8 CDs in total for a price of 70 euros, inclusive of 17 for shipping (total comes out to ~ $85 bucks). Yeah, the shipping is probably high but the all-in cost works for me.

I'm almost sure Fresh Sounds are a different operation from Planet/Definitive.

I've been impressed by the Fresh Sounds performance when ordering - cheap and quick. The chap who runs Fresh Sounds, Jordi Pujol, certainly gets heaps of praise.
