jazzbo Posted October 19, 2022 Report Posted October 19, 2022 Got our first substantial snowfall last night (first snowfall was Monday night) and lost power for a few minutes and had no cable or internet from 6 a.m. til noon. Glad it came back! First I listened to: Billie Holiday "Lady Sings the Blues" Universal SHM-CD 2022 This one really works well as an "album." I love Billie. My dog sank into a deep sleep the moment I put her on. . .almost every time. I think that means she loves her too. Then: "Lee Wiley Sings the Songs of George Gershwin and Cole Porter" . . . I have neglected revisiting Lee Wiley for too long. Finally, right now: Joe Henderson "Mode for Joe" Universal Japan SHM-CD 2022. This is a repressing of the fabled SHM-CD that had an alternate totally new until the Mosaic set came out. Got this and the Billie Holiday in a nice box from cdJapan yesterday. Quote
Rabshakeh Posted October 19, 2022 Report Posted October 19, 2022 Gunter Hampel, Jeanne Lee, Toni Marcus – Waltz For 3 Universes In A Corridor (Birth, 1972) Oosh this is a good one. Quote
jazzbo Posted October 19, 2022 Report Posted October 19, 2022 "Carlos Santana & Buddy Miles Live!" Quad SACD (stereo layer). This was a party record for me back in the days. (Not always requested or appreciated by others!) The stereo layer sounds amazing to me. Quote

jazzbo Posted October 19, 2022 Report Posted October 19, 2022 (edited) disc 5 Bob Dylan "The Bootleg Series Vol. 14: More Blood, More Tracks" Some incredible song-writing and singing on this set and this disc. Edited October 19, 2022 by jazzbo Quote

Hampel is someone that I still need to investigate more thoroughly. All those Birth releases aren't exactly easy to find. Then again, there's always listening via the internet, I suppose. (It's not as much fun, though. ) NP: I assume it's a minority viewpoint, but I actually prefer Jobim's subsequent releases with Claus Ogerman -- Jobim aka Matita Perê, Urubu, and Terra Brasilis -- over the LPs arranged by Deodato -- Stone Flower and Tide. Larry Kart Posted October 20, 2022 Report Posted October 20, 2022 Dexter Gordon -- Live at Carnegie Hall Very good late Dexter (1977 IIRC) -- very well recorded and the Cables, Reid, Gladden rhythm section has the pots on. On one of the two tenor battle tracks with Johnny Griffin ("Blues Up and Down") I give it to Griffin on points -- he's really inspired. Quote

It was two tunes with Griff: "Blues Up and Down" and "Cheesecake". But I have it on the CBS album "Great Encounters" . 8 hours ago, BillF said: 8 hours ago, Jim Duckworth said: The "Our Man in Paris" is one of my favourite regathering of Bop Veterans, with first generation boppers Dex, Bud and Klook. The really cook, I like the louder drumming of Klook and Bud has one of his greatest moments from his time in Paris (always if he could play with fellow Americans , the others could be "Hawk in Germany" , "Blakey in Paris".....) Dub Modal Posted October 20, 2022 Report Posted October 20, 2022 I saw the 180 proof reissue in the bins yesterday. Passed on it but listening to the only track I can find streaming "Inside Ourselves". Good stuff. SQ on the LP reissue is supposed to be not great, but it may be the only reasonable way to hear this album unless the Japanese CD is that much better. Anyway, the title track is a nice morning tune.
