Big Beat Steve Posted August 21, 2020 Report Posted August 21, 2020 RIP. Incredible that it is already 22 years that I had a record cover and his autobiography signed by him at a concert in Britain. He must have been a very approachable, down-to-earth guy (as told by friends from Strasbourg who had run a fanzine in the 80s and got into contact with him for an interview and kept in contact for quite a while). Dan Gould Posted August 21, 2020 Report Posted August 21, 2020 Long productive life well-lived. I recently found a copy of a true obscurity (from what I can see), recorded in Africa in the early 1970s, called Soweto to Harlem. Listened on Sunday while driving between Naples and Tampa and its a great recording, all blues or gospel-blues and really strong playing. RIP. Quote
JSngry Posted August 21, 2020 Report Posted August 21, 2020 RIP. He brought more than Cornbread to the table, a lot more. Quote

That all-blues recording kept the honking and squealing to a bear minimum. Might not have been any in fact. I noticed he did a two-tenor album with David Murray: https://www.discogs.com/Hal-Singer-Featuring-David-Murray-Challenge/release/4577162 Quote

mikeweil Posted August 24, 2020 Report Posted August 24, 2020 R.I.P. A witness of our age. Just ordered a CD of some Savoy sides that was on my wish list for many, many years. Seems he had achieved a perfect balance of R & B and jazz in the tradition of Hawk and Webster. Great stuff. Quote
