  3. Ah, that's too bad. I had read that she was in hospice care. Was glad to see her at the show Cliff Peterson mentioned. A true original!
  4. RIP
  5. RIP to an artist and survivor!
  6. The Hindemith Quartets are a gas! Especially listened to in order. The basic premises don't change so much, but the fleshing out of them REALLY does. These are not really a "celebrated" body of work, and I kinda get it. There was enough going on at the time (and after) that these can maybe have gotten lost in the shuffle. But enough time has passed, a lot of dust has settled, and here these things still are, none the worse for wear, still looking us dead in the eye and not blinking. Maybe the really "heavy" stop doesn't become fully engaged until #4, but, really, with the possible exception of #1, they all areat the very least, engaging, and eventually engrossing. Check them out, by the JSQ or by anybody. School starts for my granddaughter tomorrow, so that means it's the end of summer, and also the end of Summer With The Juilliard String Quartet. It has been a total blast. Once I got started, this was pretty much all I listened to, and to be honest, I'm not in any big hurry to stop. Onward!
  7. Today
  8. RIP. She lived the life.

  13. Sad news. Sheila Jordan, a singular voice in jazz, has died https://www.npr.org/2025/08/11/847306270/sheila-jordan-obituary
  14. Now on my turntable: Sheila Jordan - The Crossing (BlackHawk, 1986) R.I.P.
  15. People who know people that know Sheila's daughter indicate that Sheila died. I last saw Sheila in 2021 in Kingston, NY with Alan Broadbent on piano and Harvie S on bass. Good show. First time I saw her was at an Elk's Lodge in Cobleskill NY circa 1993. Numerous times in between.
  16. Thank you for sharing this, @hopkins! Fascinating stuff. What a cool thing this young man has done, making his entire collection available to the public -- and just as important -- sharing his passion and his expertise! The whole thing sorta reminded of a Japanese jazz kissa that's dedicated to early jazz. Next time I'm in NYC, I'm going to go!
  17. It seems that she is the last of her generation, somebody who actually hung out and performed with Bird et al in the 1940s. She was also a fabulous, enormously talented artist and wonderful person. I had the pleasure to meet her and talk to her for a while. It was unforgettable. RIP
  18. I saw her perform when she was in her 80s and to me she sounded just like she did on her records from the '60s. I loved it. (Of course now that I'm in my '80s I'm not as impressed with her age-- just her singing and personality. )
  19. "Three Shades of Blue". I'd promised myself that I wasn't going to buy any more books about Miles Davis (or Bob Dylan) but a friend was reading this and wanted to talk about it. It's pretty good. He seems to have read everything ever published about Miles, Trane and Bill Evans and done some important new interviews. (He does point out how all the sources contradict each other.) However, at one point he writes of the AABA song form: "two choruses followed by a bridge (aka channel, release, or middle eight) followed by an out-chorus." I've never heard of the A eight bars being called a "chorus" nor of the final 8 being called the "out-chorus". I always thought a chorus was all 32 bars. Is his terminology at all common?
  20. She is immortal ...
  21. I am afraid it is probably true as I heard she was in hospice and had not been heard from in days. Sigh. 96 is great. . .and so was she.
  22. Close friends of Sheila Jordan are reporting on social media that she has died at age 96. I'm not putting R.I.P. in the title of this post because I haven't seen confirmation from family or other official source, but I have no doubt that it is true. One of the all-time great Detroiters. There was only one of those ...
  23. Another, different trio, Shirley Horn Trio “Live at the 1994 Monterey Jazz Festival” Wow I love the sound of Charles Ables' (Fender Jazz?--sounds like one to me) bass here. 319×320 12.3 KB

  26. Yeah, I think people are getting hung up on perceived similarities between "used goods" and the secondary art market, in which the object such as a painting is unique. Used goods can be rare or valuable for a variety of reasons but are not the same as, say, a Frank Stella work for which his estate could/should receive a percentage on an auction sale.
