  2. I've been a frustrated jazz fan for so many years. I think it's because I was born with the internet age, and couldn't afford vinyls, so I listen on YouTube. 99% of the jazz I listen to have no lyrics. When I'm listening to Pink Floyd or The Doors, I can tell immediately, but not with jazz. But I think I'm not stuck on certain artists, but certain characteristics. I never got into early jazz. I love sad music. Minor keys with 7th chords, but diminished chords. Byzantine scales. I love slow-tempo so much, probably because I have enough anxiety, and I'm trying to listen to music that will make me feel better, as opposed to listening to the same 6,500 songs because I'm familiar with them, which gives me comfort. But I'm always looking to expand, so if you have recommendations, I would be grateful. When I say "greatest", I don't mean the most popular, but your favorites, OR, songs you think I'd love (and hopefully others reading this in the future).
  3. I'm not completely finished (I'm on Episode #9), but it's full of platitudes. And a ton of clichés, truisms, or empty aphorisms, mostly by Wynt Marsalis, who takes up the most time in this documentary. I do like some of the interviews, and the narration covers some good stuff, and I like the chronological approach. I think some might overrated this because I think any documentary on jazz would be cool. I'd like to hear more about music. But I'm not "digging" Ken Burns. He seems guilty of something by his approach. I'd guess there's many black and white audiences who would complete this and think less of the other. Music is for everyone.
  4. It does not. Ages ago, I had a friend who had that option on their turntable. I can't even remember the brand. I don't think I've ever listened to a 16 rpm record.
  5. Yeah, this was my version:

  15. Philology has quite a run, Paolo Piangiarelli was a dedicated fan but with a small marketing budget. He attended IAJE IN 2004 and raved about the young alto saxophonist FraHe was long frustrated with US jazz magazines not reviewing his recordings because he didn't have the funds to buy ads. Just his array of releases by Phil Woods and Lee Konitz, along with Italian jazz greats like Franco D'Andrea and Renato Sellani, to name just a few, is very impressive. I heard that he was battling depression around the time that his website went off line. He died on January 1, 2022. Philology titles regularly appear on Dusty Groove, but some are hard to find.
  16. Yeah! Half of it is Dakar.

  19. Not exactly a common date... The OG: 16 2/3 RPM!!!! So what was Hawes doing in the East?
  20. Searching online for a list of less well known jazz labels (for no particular reason at all, just something to browse over lunch, thought maybe I’d see a handful I’d forgotten, or never knew)… And as with most all of my jazz searches, the results led back to an Organissmo thread (this one). So bump!!
  21. I love that album. the Song of the World is wonderful, the lyrics really fit to me since in the warm season it happens often that after working all night long I spend the early morning at some lake and take a swim and feel about what that song expresses. And the whole album is great. Some boppish stuff, some ”free”, and some with a kind of backbeat. Very very nice !
  22. I just learned from a Jim Alfredson Facebbok post that George Howard passed away at the age of 100. Jim brought George into his home studio in 2017 to record "How It's Done", Howard's first recording - undertaken at the age of 92! It is a great CD and I'm glad Jim convinced George to do it. Lansing's City Pulse did a story on the session: https://lansingcitypulse.com/stories/oh-yeah-george,2650 Here's George's obit: https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/name/george-howard-obituary?id=60161751 I'm going to give this CD a spin again. discogs link: https://www.discogs.com/release/34602784-George-Howard-How-Its-Done
