  1. Past hour
  2. Agreed .... this is an very satisfying "Deluxe Edition" ....
  3. Today
  4. I saw a video on Twitter today of a man apparently pooping in his pants at Normandy. That's weird.
  5. He's not on the Double Concerto - soloists there are Boskovsky and Brabec. This disc is from the Furtwangler Brahms Box -
  6. Kurt Masur - The Complete Warner Classics Edition, disc 57. Interesting that it also wasn't included in "The Menuhin Century" box.
  7. Juan Soto removed from tonight’s game after rain delay with “left elbow discomfort.” That’s often a red alert for torn UCL/TJS. A huge blow to NY’s offensive prowess and postseason chances if it proves to be the case.
  8. who are you? Can you id yourself? Sorry Tad, didn't realize that was you. It's not that exciting but I have one unknown Prestige anecdote that involves Weinstock, Miles, and Dave Schildkraut
  9. Yesterday
  10. Man who has lived on cruise for 23 years is now suffering health side effects.
  11. Shostakovich, Symphonies Nos. 1 and 7 Leonard Bernstein, Chicago Symphony Orchestra (Deutsche Grammophon)
  12. Just so you know, the Stanley Cup Finals begin Saturday - Edmonton Oilers vs. Florida Panthers. In 1995, Baltimore won the Grey Cup. Wags on Twitter enjoy pointing out that an American city has won the Grey Cup more recently than a Canadian city has won the Stanley Cup. By the way, every one of the nine CFL cities has won the Grey Cup more recently than any Canadian city has won the Stanley Cup. So you would expect that everyone in Canada is rooting for Edmonton, right? Well, no. The Panthers are the Miami team. It so happens that a great many Canadians spend their winters in that area. So, many Canadians will be rooting for them rather than the Oilers.
  13. This is for my book on Prestige, but I'm looking for what must have been an album on Columbia. There's a very weird liner note on the back, from a noted jazz critic, where he talks about his teenager daughter hearing a Monk recording and saying "He's cool -- he sounds sort of like Tim Hardin." Or something like that. Ring a bell with anyone?
  14. “The Greatest Jazz Concert in the World” Pablo 3 cd set, disc 2 (all Elllington Orchestra)
  15. He's playing here in Phoenix on Sunday night, tempted to go see him again. I saw him about 2 months ago in Austin (he plays at the Continental Club there every Tuesday when he's not on the road), and it was fantastic.
  16. John Coltrane recorded with Jimmy Garrison Ravi Coltrane recorded with Matthew Garrison as part of Jack DeJohnette's band Terry Gibbs recorded with Alice McLeod Gibbs (later Coltrane) Gerry Gibbs recorded with Michelle Coltrane (Alice's daughter, John's stepdaughter) Any other examples of the children of collaborators collaborating? Rene McLean, Mtume and Kenny Drew Jr come to mind as other recorded second generation players. Actually I'd like hearing about other second generation artists even if they don't fit the thread title criteria.
  17. I dug out the Deluxe edition of this one to listen to the “Detroit Mix” that Marvin submitted to Motown and which was rejected in favor of the remix that became the original release of the album. It’s a great alternate version. And this music in either form is just. . . amazing, masterful. And this edition includes a bit more clearly the line that is also repeated by Donny Hathaway on his “Live” album and explains for me life and after-life and the cosmos: “Everything is everything.”
  18. The Riders lost $1.1 million last year. This comes as a surprise to me, because although they were not a good team without Trevor Harris, they typically lead the league in t-shirt (etc.) sales. https://3downnation.com/2024/06/05/saskatchewan-roughriders-post-1-1-million-net-operating-loss-for-2023-cfl-season/ ***** The Elks revealed their 2024 home uniform yesterday. 19. Really enjoying the (unlisted) Brahms Double Concerto on this disc. Since it is a concert recording it isn't included in the big Furtwangler box.
  20. Music from the good old times - still fresh Verve 35MJ 3278/9 Japan Oct. 1983 - rec. between 1944 and 1954
