  3. I'm a big fan of Kikuchi, but no way am I in on 6 CDs worth of electronics. If samples are available and impress, I could see going for one or two.
  4. Ariel Bart - After Silence (self-released) Not your usual trio date: Ariel Bart (chromatic harmonica), Talia Erdal (cello) and Arseny Rykov (piano). The young Israeli who now lives in Berlin penned all the tracks of her third studio album. Wonderful music and surely one of the most remarkable albums I´ve heard in years.
  5. 1. Scope of This Document This file brings together all source-based information concerning the documented and semi-documented intersections between Don Cherry and Cecil Taylor during the Candid period. Only material directly relevant to Cherry, Taylor, and the lost Candid project is included. 2. DownBeat Yearbook 1972 Buell Neidlinger briefly mentions an episode involving Don Cherry during the early 1960s Candid period. While not describing a recording, the testimony indicates Cherry’s presence around Taylor’s circle and aligns with later accounts. 3. Cadence Magazine, Vol. 12, No. 6 (June 1986) In this interview, conducted by Bob Rusch, Neidlinger recalls Cherry’s involvement in a New York R’n’B session. Although not directly tied to Taylor, it reinforces Cherry’s proximity to the same musical environment active during the Candid years. 4. Cadence Magazine, Vol. 23, No. 10 (October 1997) This interview contains the most significant testimony regarding a planned Cherry–Taylor collaboration. Neidlinger states that he organized a recording session with Cecil Taylor, that Don Cherry attended all rehearsals and was expected to be the trumpeter, and that Cherry withdrew on the eve of the session after Ornette Coleman warned him that participating would jeopardize his position in Ornette’s band. 5. The Question of Actual Musical Encounters No verified recording or documented performance confirms that Cherry and Taylor ever played together. Neidlinger’s 1997 account shows that a collaboration was planned and nearly realized. Other musicians have hinted at informal encounters, but no primary source has been verified. 6. Current Assessment There is no evidence of a completed Candid recording involving both Cherry and Taylor. The testimonies from 1972, 1986, and 1997 help reconstruct the environment in which such a project could have occurred. The 1997 interview provides the strongest indication of a near-collaboration. Further archival research may clarify whether any rehearsal tapes or documentation survive.
  6. Joshua Redman “Round Again” Nonesuch cd The reunion of the “Mood Swing” band, from 2020. Joshua Redman – tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone Brad Mehldau – piano Christian McBride – bass Brian Blade – drums
  7. Superb opening track. Edit to say this was my gateway to Grant Green, sublime solo, and I've been hooked ever since. Great stuff, this record. Woah. Ordering it now.
  8. I’ve also found another source, in the DownBeat Yearbook 1972, where Neidlinger himself recounts the same episode. It doesn’t contradict the 1986 Cadence account — it simply presents the situation from a slightly different angle.
  9. Cold, and a light dusting of snow overnight–more scheduled for this afternoon. It’s one of those winters. Starting off with disc 8 of the 13 cd “Nucleus–Live at the BBC” box set from Repertoire Records. Keyboard-less sessions from 1984 and 1985.
  10. Inspired to spin these excellent Hank Mobley titles this morning:
  11. Thanks Steve, I will check that out! Another fun source is the glossary in Bernard Wolfe's bio of Mezz Mezzrow, Really the Blues. ( https://archive.org/details/reallyblues0000mezz/page/370/mode/2up )
  12. Yep! Along with it's companion in the "1600" series:
  13. January 17 Billy Harper - 1943
  14. Just to clarify the source: the Neidlinger quote about Don Cherry and the New York City R’n’B session comes from Cadence Magazine, Vol. 12, No. 6 (June 1986). The interview was done by Bob Rusch, not Michael Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald simply indexed the material.
  15. Yes, that's a well-done book. I bought my copy in 2011. The chapters on the various labels provide good overviews that are not extensive but detailed enough for most purposes, but for some labels that are really well-documented you instinctively use this book more as an appetizer and then reach for the more comprehensive ones (such as Colin Escott's "Good Rockin' Tonight" on Sun Records). I've also found this book is usefully combined with the label chapters in the "Both Sides Now" online album discography on labels such as King or Duke-Peacock. As for them not saying anything bad (or not much, really) about the men behind the labels, could this be one reason why they chose not to do a chapter on Savoy Records, for example, I wonder? At any rate, I think Herman Lubinsky was way more controversial than Syd Nathan.
  16. A nice one! Bought an original through eBay sometime in the early 2000s and then made several photocopied and staspled sets (with color cover and all) and passed them on to cats in today's hepcats scene around here. All copies were snapped up in no time at all. Sometime ago (while searching for Down Besats, I think) I noticed it's now online and dowmloaded the file "just in case". I wonder when someone is going to put Dan Burley's Jive dictionary online (not just the bare contents - they are somewhere out there, as is the one by Cab Calloway) but the exact facsimile. Here's a more recent publication for recommended reading on the same subject: https://www.amazon.com/Straight-Fridge-Dad-Dictionary-Hipster/dp/0767908406
  17. Thanks for the heads-up! I'm a big Kikuchi fan, but would have been inclined to skip these because of Aurora... But if it's better than Aurora... Will need to listen...
  18. Great pick 👍
  19. Great song, though!
  20. This trio was absurdly great tonight. Lordy Lord 9 minute piece followed by two 15 minute pieces ending with a 18-19 minute tour de force. The band stunned itself. Genius level improvisation by three of the greatest musicians on the planet.
