  1. Past hour
  2. Doug Ramsey was the M.C. at a Jazz Party I attended on the West Coast a number of years ago. Always found his writing about jazz interesting. Doug also wrote a book (besides Take Five) titled "Jazz Matters" that I read a while ago. R.I.P.
  3. I always enjoyed Mr. Ramsey's jazz writings. I have one of his books on my jazz shelf downstairs. Can't remember the name of it at the moment. Also enjoyed his bio of Paul Desmond which I have on Kindle. R.I.P.
  4. Ms. York is a new discovery, for me anyway. A really fine, bop based pianist. Originally from Canada, now resident in the Chicago area. I really like her playing with the Affinity Trio. Lots of interesting YouTube videos, as well.
  5. I believe it is.
  6. It doesn't really matter at this point as most of the LPs I was talking about have already been bought, so some thought it was worth the gamble.
  7. Sorry to hear this news. R.I.P.
  8. Michael Formanek: New Digs (Intakt CD)
  9. They’re probably going by another record. I imagine that’s pretty common info.

  11. September 8 1956. https://www.worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Music/Cash-Box/50s/1956/CB-1956-09-08.pdf I am trying to square Dot as "cover" label with them also employing Rusty Bryant. He was not for squares.
  12. Sad news but a long life with many contributions to jazz reporting/comment.
  13. Jimmy Rowles “Subtle Legend Vol. 1” Storyville cd "The Lizard playing at the top of his game.
  14. The noted author, jazz journalist and TV newsman Doug Ramsey passed away in his sleep early this morning, according to his son Paul. He was 91. Ramsey's contributions to jazz journalism are immense, especially his landmark biography of Paul Desmond, Take Five: The Public and Private Lives of Paul Desmond.
  15. I get that a sealed vintage record is an unknown LP. I also get that discogs doesn't allow you to post a record for sale unless you link it to one of the LPs released. But when the LP is listed with specifics like Van Gelder in the dead wax, then it's just not right. For instance, they're selling this: https://www.discogs.com/shop/item/4135184193 Clicking the "View Release" button brings you to an LP described as having: Matrix / Runout (Side A runout): BST-84058-A LW RVG STEREO Matrix / Runout (Side B runout): BST-84058-B · LW RVG STEREO If this were the actual record inside that sealed jacket, it would be a good deal at $90. But when you open and find that it's not a Van Gelder cut, can you return it? Unlikely. Stereo Jack's used to sell vintage sealed records for pretty cheap for this reason. I bought quite a few of them over the years and I never lucked into a Van Gelder Blue Note LP. It's like buying sealed packs of baseball cards and hoping it contains a rare card.
  16. Another Savoy session, “Opus de Jazz” Savoy/Denon 20 bit lp facsimile cd Milt, Frank, two Joneses and a Kenny.
  17. "Sealed Mint Blue Note" = UA blue/white b label, warped vinyl.
  18. I like both sides of Lou Donaldson. His bop soloing is fun and at times reaches greatness. His conception, ideas and technical ability to realize them. The soul jazz stuff is fun too, and even in his later stuff he still tends frequently to reach down inside and pull out some ferocious bop.
  19. Rüdiger Carl / COWWS-Quintett – Virtual COWWS
  20. William Green and the Marty Jazz All Stars - Shades of Green
