Mingus with Dannie Richmond?

I endlessly make playlists on my computer, and of course there are many featuring the great drummers in our history. I have also created some playlists that showcase how a particular drummer connects with another player, which could be a sax player, pianist, guitarist. In some cases, I don't need to document it separately--there is simply such a large amount of Coltrane with Elvin and Miles with Tony Williams. Spotlights so far: John Abercrombie with Jack DeJohnette Sonny Rollins with Max Roach Monk with Art Blakey Chick Corea with Roy Haynes I should do some more.

oh no, this is terrible news! I only got to see him once, with the Keith Jarrett and Gary Peacock trio. I remember how loud and powerful he sounded at times, but never overwhelming the piano.
-
Now playing "After the Rain" with just Jack (on piano) and Bill Frisell. It's great to hear some of those piano performances, especially on this beautiful tune. Jack is really front and center, with Frisell providing very soft and subtle background.

Thank you so much ! Well, Pharoah Sanders“s music is my best friend, it has been since my early teens. My consolation if I am depressed, my companion for most sublime happiness. Anyway, I have gone thru many things, but this year has been a roller coaster of emotions from deepest desparation and sadness, and moments of ultimate happiness, where I felt on top of the world. Today I“m much better than yesterday. Pharoah shares this happiness with me, as I have spinned this wonderful record. And I want to state: This year, among my creative outburst due to all those extreme feelings, one of my new originals is titled "Tune for Pharoah" and will be on the album that will be out early next year. We recorded that tune and other tunes with a great singer, Miss Lili Mae, who had made her own record with the late, great Jim Rotondi. The masters sound great. This was 2 days of happiness in the studio and on gigs, really. But you go out of the studio, and you finished a gig, and the demons come back.....that“s life......

For a lot of Black Churches, the church organ WAS a B3! https://www.npr.org/2016/01/03/461818544/how-the-hammond-organ-sound-laid-the-tracks-for-gospels-hit-train

Got my shipment notice, but it'll take a while for it to make its way out here to the Best Coast. -
Getz was one of those deeply flawed human beings who played great music. Like Kevin in the original thread, seeing this has caused me to get out "Sweet Rain" and play it again. It is a very fine record.

I thought he would live forever. Jack was on so many great records with so many great artists. I liked a lot of his leader work, especially in the 70s and 80s. A giant and legend. R.I.P.

Ike Quebec 45 Sessions Being Reissued - Vinyl & CD
Peter Friedman replied to Dan Gould's topic in Re-issues
This discussion of organs strikes me as a bit strange. First - Church organs are often pipe organs that sound (to me at least) dramatically different than Hammond electric organs frequently played by jazz musicians.Though there are other electric organs also used in jazz and other settings. Second - Jazz organists do not all sound the same. Compare for example Jimmy Smith with Wild Bill Davis. Also think of Larry Young, Don Patton, Milt Buckner, Akiko, Shirley Scott, Mike LeDonne, Johnny Hammond Smith, Lonnie Smith,Bill Doggett, and on and on. So to refer to jazz organists as sounding like Roller Rink Roly Poly organists is, in my view far far from accurate. Sorry, Don Patterson Not Patton. -
Absolutely one of the greats. 83 is too young ā or at least a little younger than need be. RIP.

This is a bummer. Such a great player. Subtlety at its finest.
