What Classical Music Are You Listening To?
Peter Friedman replied to StarThrower's topic in Classical Discussion

Enjoyed watching/listening to Mulligan with Mingus (!) on that Mingus 'Montreux 75' DVD yesterday.

I misread, sorry. Put me down for March, please.

I picked up a copy of this Cadillac/BBC 'Cortege' 2CD at the Westbrook gig in Torquay this afternoon. Will give it a listen tomorrow. The 'Band of Bands' sounded great today, for my money it is one of the best Westbrook lineups. The material also draws on gems of the past repertoire and is astutely selected.

Ian Carr's Miles Davis
sidewinder replied to GA Russell's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I was fortunate enough to tell Ian how much I appreciated his book and his albums to his face ! Had forgotten that I've also got a copy of the Cole book. Picked it up cheap last year but not yet read. -
Mmm, nope, you can't. January, February, May and December are taken. All else is open.
-
I'll pre-order when I can.

BFT 260 - Tom Turkey's Terrifying Tryptophan 2025 Revenge Tour!!!!!!
Joe replied to JSngry's topic in Blindfold Test
Yes, I can ID #7. Let's just say I don't think I ever expected the pianist and the srums/timbales player here to appear on record together. https://www.jazzdisco.org/montego-joe/catalog/#prestige-pr-7336 Your clue on #10 has me wondering... could that be Rusty Bryant? -
Too bad Mulligan's Stringtime was never released as an official LP. (Or would it have been an album with Vinnie Burke as co-leader?) The contents (nine tracks total, I think) are available across the Mosaic Select and The Gerry Mulligan Songbook. Gerry Mulligan: baritone saxophone Paul Palmieri: guitar Dick Wetmore: violin Calo Scott: cello Vinnie Burke: bass Dave Bailey: drums recorded December 5, 1957 1. May-Reh 2. The Preacher 3. Good Bait 4. Bags' Groove 5. Lullaby In Rhythm 6. Body And Soul 7. Out of Nowhere 8. I'll Remember April 9. I Can't Get Started It's probably been discussed here (somewhere?), but what's the story about why this recording date never saw the light of day on vinyl? It's not at all a throwaway session. Mulligan plays really well; Wetmore a little less so. Time for a Tone Poets release! 😁

yeah, I pronounce(d) it the second way. the first, I guess, is more correct according to that site (and sounds pretty good). I was kind of surprised that, in Danish, Bent Axen is pronounced just like it looks!

What makes this particular case potentially tricky is that it's a Polish name, Garbarek's father was Polish ... So unless the pronunciations in the two languages coincide, it also depends on Jan's preferences which of the two pronunciations he prefers for his name...

I've used this site for years and, for me, there's always a button with the triangle "play" icon. The recording is someone saying Yan GAR-bar-ek That means I had it almost exactly right; I would usually tend to say Yan Gar-BAR-ek.

Thanks for participating and some very cogent commentary. Have a good nap on Thanksgiving, and don't smoke! -
I'd like to know about that as well, though I expect it is nice. DeFever is certainly a well-regarded mastering engineer (& musician).
-
Great stuff! Wish RCA, like the Sonny Rollins RCA original albums box set, would treat Paul Desmond's albums the same way. I'd buy that set in a second. I have three of them and would scoop up the others in a nice deluxe original albums box set in a heartbeat.
