  1. Past hour
  2. The worst thing about it is that Pablo (1) did not consult with expert Coltrane discographers like Wild before issuing the set and (2) did not make corrections even after they were confronted with convincing evidence of the mistakes.
  3. Betty Roche's Singin' & Swingin'
  4. Today
  5. This, and I will add Bud as another contributatory influence on Hawes. Plus, I think that Bud and Tatum are closer than Hawes and Newborn. Those two paths continued to diverge. That church thing came to play. Some people are REALLY fond of the David Axelrod stuff, but ..not me. Yet there it is
  6. There was an article in disc'ribe, the magazine Michael Cuscuna and David Wild ran at the time of their Coltrane discography, that already stated there were no tapes to be found.
  7. No, the Prestige had a quartet session with Larry Bunker von vibes.
  8. Is this the session on Prestige, along with a Freddie Redd session?
  9. Yesterday
  10. Craving some jazz vocals. Etta Jones' From the Heart. Lots of highlights here. Good Morning, Heartache is beautiful. There's not one that I don't enjoy
  11. Holy Ghost

    Anthony Braxton

Polarizing. WOW. Dortmund (1976) changed everything (for me). When I was studying bass clarinet in my early teens, and heard this, this record stopped me straight in my tracks, and I never played the same since.
  12. Susannah McCorkle “I’ll Take Romance” Concord cd. I’ll take romance as well. Frank Wess is really nice here. 225×222 16.2 KB
  13. 👍 I'll confess. I am a Prestige blow-out jam session sucker. I love these sessions, and buy them in a heartbeat whenever I see them.
  14. Right? This album is BADASS. Everything clicks! Dude, how cool is that. Different worlds. Wish I could've experienced that. 👍 I am really warming up to Art's Galaxy output.
  15. This happened in the early 60's, but my mom recognized NKC straight away while he was taking a break at an Akron club, while enjoying dinner with my grandparents and recognized him straight away. My mom told me how nice he was when she went up to him and said "hi."
  16. The band with Jerry Jeff Walker? That's crazy!
  17. In my view, Hawes and Phineas Newborn are not at all similar. Hawes playing is rooted in the Black church with a strong dose of blues infusing much of what he plays. Phineas Newborn sounds far more tied to the Art Tatum model of fantastic technical skill and often very fast playing. Though Newborn does play blues tunes, the blues feeling is not evident throughout his playing as it is with Hawes.
  18. Yeah, Byrd was a wild guy! A student of Barney Childs starting a rock band! Kind of reminds me of the experimentation going on in the 60s with Bob Bruno and his band Circus Maximus. To quote Wiki, "In late December 1967, the band performed in an unusual pair of "Electric Christmas" concerts together with New York Pro Musica, an ensemble that performed early music. There were two 80-minute performances. The material performed included a reworking of 14th-century composer Guillaume de Machaut's "La douce dame jolie" as an English-language song "Sweet Lovely Lady" arranged by Robert M. Bruno for the ensemble, and Bruno original "Chess Game" that, unbeknownst to Bruno but noted by John White, director of the Pro Musica, strongly echoed the "Romanesca", a piece that first appears in 16th-century Spanish lute books."] Then you have Phil Woods recording "Love Song for Che" on his "Round Trip" album.
