“The Complete Roulette Dinah Washington Recordings” Mosaic Records disc 1 of 5 I love the sound Roulette produced on their records, almost without exception spacious and clear with a touch of warm room sound. I’ve neglected this box set too long, when I have listened to Dinah it has been the Emarcy/Mercury years mostly as I have all those complete sets Verve put out. Listening today the Billie Holiday influence hit me hard, but that’s not a bad thing and it’s not sheer imitation as I have encountered among others. There’s a greasy flavor to the arrangements for her and I like to sink back into that blue mood. 300×300 7.25 KB DavidF 2h Throwback time! Wow. A tie.

The later albums are surprisingly good.

Maybe this is common knowledge but since moving to Harlem last year I discovered Rodgers and Hart grew up right next to each other.

I never really spent time with later Pentangle, but have and adore all the Transatlantic/Reprise albums.

R.I.P.

Agreed. the three Pentangle box sets on Cherry Red are highly recommended purchases, superseding all other Pentangle releases: https://www.cherryred.co.uk/pentangle-the-albums-19681972-7cd-boxset https://www.cherryred.co.uk/pentangle-through-the-ages-19841995-6cd-clamshell-box-set https://www.cherryred.co.uk/pentangle-reunions-live-amp-bbc-sessions-19822011-4cd-clamshell-box

A small side note about the appreciation of the partners of Richard Rodgers: I'm reading "Eddie Condon's Treasury of Jazz " right now (in small instalments), and in the chapter on Lee Wiley (written by George Frazier) there is this: "To hear Lee at her best, listen to her Storyville LP - the portfolio of Rodgers and Hart. Not Rodgers and that other fellow (who would be Oscar Hammerstein II, who, no disrespect intended, no Larry Hart, he) ..." I suppose the experts' opinions do differ on the respective merits of Rodgers' partners?

Nothing is missing in your collection... 😂

Pretty sure I saw him once or twice with Richard Thompson. He had a VERY distinctive sound. Always enjoyed his presence on an album. Pentangle WAS a unique band. Pentangle 2.0 (they didn't call themselves "2.0") was really good, too. They released about 6 albums in the 80s-90s. A little bit electric, but not in a bad way. And not intrusive.

On the: The Thousand Threads, a Neneh Cherry's Book, there is this information:
... By 1954, and still in high school, Don had earned a union card and was playing professionally. Often, he would compete in talent shows around the neighbourhood with people like Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson. Don said that Johnny, slicker than the rest, always won. With Billy, George Newman and Pee Wee Williams, they formed a group called the Jazz Messiahs, playing bebop and jazz in clubs around town. Together they played R&B clubs, going as far north as Vancouver. ..
My question is: Is Pee Wee Williams a bass player?
Does anyone know him?
