What Live Concerts and Studio Sessions Have You Witnessed In Person?
Ken Dryden replied to Ken Dryden's topic in Discography
I was present for both sets one of the two nights, I think it was May 3 2019. Again, I was present for whichever trio tracks that are included from both sets on May 3, 2019, featuring Buster Williams and Matt Wilson -
Abdullah Ibrahim “3” Gearbox 2 cd set, disc 1 Amazing music, incredible recording and mastering.

New Art Pepper Box 1959 - Live at the Cellar
jazzbo replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
It's awkwardly worded but I think it's meant to indicate that most of the incomplete songs run to near completion before the tape ran out. -

Thanks. I am a big Art pepper fan and this looks very promising. However, the following (highlighted by me) has me a bit wary: "Everything Happens To Me: 1959 – Live At The Cellar utilizes a fly-on-the-wall approach that includes all the existing music as the recordings happened. As a result, the 4-CD / Digital set includes some incomplete tracks, but most songs run near to completion." I can understand if some songs may have not been taped and are missing but what does "most songs run near to completion" mean? That is odd wording and seems to imply that most songs are not complete (it says most songs only run "near to completion"). Can that be true? I hope not. -
I added the discogs link below so you can see what material is included on the 7 CDs and 1 Blu-ray. Again, my copy lacks the book. Here is a nice copy of the recent Who Are You Super Deluxe box set at about half of the new price because this copy is missing the book. It has everything else - CDs, blu-ray, outer box. But no book. The Who – Who Are You 2025 Super Deluxe box set (7 CD/1 Blu-ray), missing book. It contains all 8 discs and the slipcover that holds them, plus the outer slipcover. Missing the book. All is in NM condition - the outer box is still in original shrink wrap with hype sticker attached but the shrink wrap has been opened on side edge to be able to retrieve contents. https://www.discogs.com/release/35497960-The-Who-Who-Are-You $65 (+ $7 media mail shipping) U.S. shipping only. If you like B3, this album is strongly recommended. Really fun listen. Farnsworth is locked in and the choir works really really well.

RIP I first heard him play on Duke Pearson's I Don't Care Who Knows It, then on several ECM releases. My favorite is the classic, Solstice. What a talent, indeed.

"Unissued Atlantic Trios" Don Cherry, Henry Grimes & Ed Blackwell Steve Lacy, Carl Brown & Billy Higgins

There are a lot of great recordings on these labels - I was lucky to pick up a lot of the CamJazz reissue boxes back in the day. If I had to pick favorites of what I’ve heard: Muhal Richard Abrams, Blu Blu Blu & Blues Forever David Murray, Home & The Hill New Air, Live at Montreal Jazz Festival Mal Waldron, The Seagulls of Kristiansund & Crowd Scene Mal Waldron & Steve Lacy, Sempre Amore Steve Lacy, Only Monk & More Monk Paul Motian, Misterioso Geri Allen, Etudes I am sure there are others

Nice one.

So sad to hear about this. He could play the guitar AND the piano like Bill Evans, and then play the ECM stuff with Oregon, Paul Winter etc... A friend of mine studied with him, and at one lesson RT said he had just done a solo concert at Carnegie Hall, and then he packed up his guitar, walked back to his apartment, and he was just teaching a lesson like nothing happened! RIP, to one of the greats.
-
He did at least one more for Muse.
-
That was intentional, as I understand it.

Just spun it, a big oh yeah! Is it safe to say the Black Saint is more out-leaning than Soul Note, yet they are the same label?
-
What vinyl are you spinning right now??

interesting band. Never saw that record (knowingly) before. The Coryells I have are on Flying Dutchman and Vanguard, and I enjoy them to varying degrees (good to very good). Never saw him live, unfortunately. -
yeah, this is the Hemphill Black Saint I go to. And that Sarbib is good also; he's generally pretty excellent. in 2008 I wasn't as caught up on the Muhal Black Saint albums, but have since bought all except the duo with Amina, which for some reason is kind of hard to find. Can't recall the last time I saw one in the bins in a record store. The documentation of AACM, BAG, and artists in the Taylor orbit like Cyrille & Lyons (and Dixon, if you want to characterize Bill's work as such) in the 80s and 90s is probably where Bonandrini's curatorial strength really lay. I also think the George Russell dates released or re-released by Soul Note are pretty excellent.

“As Time Goes By–Carmen McRae Alone at the Dug” JVC XRCD24 Pure artistry, Carmen supporting herself at the piano, in excellent recorded sound. Wow, always MOVES me.

I suppose there's no point. It's cool to look at smoke in pictures or on an album cover; otherwise, it is out of fashion (and appriciate smoke-free smelling clothes myself).
