  3. Everyone has good days and bad days. I once met a pianist after a show to ask him for an autograph. He ignored me and acted as if I was not even standing there. A few years later, I saw him again and when I asked the leader of the gig for an autograph, the pianist stepped up and asked me if I wanted his autograph on the record too. I ended up getting the whole band to sign and got to talk to that pianist for several minutes and he was the nicest guy you'd ever meet. FWIW, if the year was closer to the late 00's (like 2008), she was going through a divorce from Wallace Roney. I worked with a woman for many years and when she was going through her divorce, she was not the same person. It was almost unbearable to be in the same room with her for about a year after her divorce. She actually apologized to me years later because she realized how badly she'd been acting to everyone, particularly men.
  4. Ha. Find this to be true with Absolutely exquisite. Right speed, perfect.
  5. You should have come to that Kahil performance in Baltimore - sublime. He comes to Baltimore every year and also has been to Rhizome DC a number of times both with the EHE and in duets with David Murray. You should reach out to him and see if you can persuade him to come closer to where you are - he's a real mensch.

I met her twice, and the personality difference was....well, bizarrely radical. First time, she played for John Szwed's course at Yale - it must have been mid 1980s? She wasn't very famous yet. I drove her to the train to go back to NYC and she was very "regular," young, friendly, unaffected, casual dress. Even knew some of my work. Second time - at a Jazz conference in NYC. I do not remember the year, but it was probably in the 20-teens. Well...a different personality entirely. Dressed formally in a "look at me" way, like she was going to the Oscars. I did talk to her (sort of) because Bob Neloms, an old friend of mine, who at this point was unwell, had been her mentor when she was growing up near Detroit. He was a mess, and I suggested that he might welcome a phone call. She was...strange, distant, disinterested, indifferent. Kinda like a politician meeting a constituent whom they don't think is particularly important, but whom they have to pretend to care about. Carried herself like she was a diva, maybe Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard. Cordial, but regal and not quite there, clearly didn't care about what I was saying. She was a great pianist, though.
  8. Thanks for the update Allen. Glad you being active. Keep us posted.
  9. I have returned, like MacArthur (the general, not the award); I am relatively happy but a bit sidetracked by PTSD. But I am, hopefully, done with surgery (25 to date). Not a lot new to report. Still annoying people. Trying to finish a film (long story in and of itself). Just did a really nice recording session in which Leo Wadada Smith played four tunes. Will be part of the soundtrack to the film. Health is ok though not terrific. Tried to find Larry Kart, though I suspect, based on his prognosis and the fact that his phone no longer works, that he is permanently hospitalized, which makes me very sad. All I do is compose and practice. Beats working for ICE.
  10. March 15 Charles Lloyd - 1938
  11. March 15 Joachim Kühn - 1944 Saw him in Göttingen, November 8, 1991, and November 7, 2009, and in Kassel, July 13, 2018
  12. Ts find, pretty good recording ! 'Pini Della Via Appia', gave me goosebumps !

Saw her perform in a trio with Ralphe Armstrong and Sherman Ferguson (a real swinging drummer playing for the benefit of the trio). It was excellent. I liked her piano playing much more than on the records.
  15. Grateful Dead Capitol Theatre, Port Chester, NY (2/24/71) disc 1, from the Enjoying the Ride box set.
  16. Tonight, Randy Brecker and his wife, Ada Rovati are playing with a local rhythm section at the tiny Press Room club in Portsmouth, NH. https://www.portsmouthnh.com/event/randy-brecker-and-ada-rovatti-at-the-press-room/
  17. Looks good. I prefer dark roasts. My brand this morning is from a local roaster.
  18. Last night this one was missing. A thorough inspection of the shelves with classical CDs revealed I had my Bizet recordings in two places. Compilations with works of several composers are a drag. This CD has, btw, the most terrific recording of the Carmen Suite you will ever hear. Most conductors tend to take it too fast - this one is right on spot and grooves the hell out of the piece.
  19. "Just One More Chance" composed by Sam Coslow & Arthur Johnston. Memorable recordings by Bing Crosby, Lucky Thompson, & others https://secondhandsongs.com/work/131495/all
  20. Several jazz musicians have been asked in the past month, but none could identify this. This is Sonny Rollins at the Bottom Line, NYC, back in 1993. Sonny had the knack of resurrecting tunes from movies that never made their way into the regular rotation of jazz musicians. This was probably covered by signers. https://mega.nz/file/ur5SAToK#5B-owbRWa48C7LAsOj517llEm6Ua_WDB4ODpsC5cKhM
