Waiting for the storm to come. . . we haven’t had much at all so far. Hope we don’t lose power! That’s my biggest fear. I would. It's a real bugbear of mine that no one maps out any of this music past 1982. That goes for non-avantgarde jazz too. One nice thing about that list is the FIG record. That was and is a good clique of musicians who still don't get enough love.

Ts-find, from the bin First track tells about the last moments when a chicken had it's head chopped of from the perspective of the chicken. You have good ears sir, ... This is stuff is smoking !💥but taste remains relative ofcourse.

Well, that was a (to me, THE, ymmv) golden era for that music. Someone else can write the sequels for 1980-2000 and 2000-2020 if they want.

That reminds me. I have a box set of Julius Katchen playing Brahms solo piano works that I like but haven't listened to in ages. Time to dig it out (of wherever I left it...).

True. But more like almost half a century at present. An older/superannuated list seems much "safer". From both writing and "discovering" points of view. 😁

Some obstacles are self-induced. But others aren't.

So...the list stops in 1980. Does that mean that somebody who uses this book to drive their primary "discovering" is going to be only a quarter-century behind the times?

I like the list from a (latecomer and relative newbie in the field) listener's perspective. Being somewhat of an old fart, I find the writing somewhat cringe-inducing. IMO pretentious to a degree and a certain amount of collector's "flexing" as I think someone put it above. Granted that's just my taste, and the enthusiasm is definitely a plus.

I saw him playing on the sidewalks of San Francisco for change in the late 70's or 80's, was stunned.

I interviewed Simmons around 20 years ago, and he definitely had a bleak go of things. No musicians made anything out of their ESP deals at the time. My understanding is that the label is trying to right some previous wrongs, but there's still almost no money in this business.
