Billy Vera knows his shit. His work on the Specialty reissues was pretty damn solid too. Look at that though, how this video is credited to "Billy Vera", like Judy Clay was an afterthought. It never stops...

Agreed it is the best work they ever did by a longshot, the only label that truly captured their magic. Columbia did not know what to do with them, and Stax just tried to fit them into the Stax mold.

Markus Rutz - Many Moons picked this up on a whim from Dusty, due to the inclusion of Greg Ward on it. He's only on one track but it does include Sharel Cassity on a handful of other tracks which is a plus. On first listen I really enjoy it. Very modern compositions, in the vein of Roy Hargrove's Earfood if i had to compare. My jazz listening isn't as frequent as it used to be so I may be off with the comparison.

From Simon Spillett on Facebook: “Some great news. A major new triple disc release of previously unheard Tubby Hayes material is to be issued very soon. I'll share more information on this as and when possible but I can tell you it's going to be a cracker. It will include sets by his quartet, quintet, octet and big band, as well as with the Jazz Couriers, and also features a couple of 'overseas' special guest appearances too. Best of all, it's in stunning audio quality. Watch this space...” https://www.facebook.com/share/p/16zTpspWFU/?mibextid=wwXIfr

Public Service Announcement "The Best of the Best: Jazz from Detroit," the documentary film that I wrote and co-produced, now has its own YouTube channel. Please consider clicking below and subscribing. We'll be posting performance videos, excerpts from the film, parts of interviews that didn't survive the final cut, and other special features. Our first entry is an except from our interview with maestro Charles McPherson in which he improvises two of the most relaxed, spare, and soulful choruses of the blues you'll ever hear. Next screening is Oct. 3 in East Lansing, Michigan. We've think we'll have some exciting news about screenings and distribution in coming soon but it's too early to talk about it all. #JazzFromDetroit

Which title, Jim? Just curious.

Blue Moon, eh? Jonki Purpos again. The real Vee Jay was ran by Billy Vera. It was short-lived but excellent. The Staples Singers volume remains a desert island set for me!
